Power Steering Help

Take one of the hydraulic lines off at the cylinder and put in bucket,start the tractor and turn the steering wheel see if hydraulic fluid comes out under pressure.

Do you see any movement in the hydraulic tank by the radiator ?

The fluid doesn't come out under any noticeable pressure difference between the engine running and not. The fluid does move. It went down when I had to get fluid back into the cylinder.

Chiming in here a little late. I had the exact same thing happen to me. It would steer fine in one direction and very hard in the other. Turns out it was the pressure relief valve built into the power steering pump. Simple adjustment. There is a Socket head cap screw cap on the pump, remove that cap then tighten the internal screw clockwise to put more pressure on the relief spring. If that does not work then you need a new pump.


The reason it is easier to steer in one direction and not the other has nothing to do with a bad cylinder seal. Hydraulic cylinders have a shaft on one side and not the other. A cylinder can push with more force with lower input pressure than it takes to pull a load because the rod in the cylinder reduces the surface area the fluid can push against. Simple logic tells me there is low pressure on the steering cylinder.

I ended up cancelling my order with Farm Pro and got all of my parts from affordable tractor sales. I put the new pump on and the steering came back to life. I worked for a couple of hours yesterday on clearing out brush growing out into my pond. I did have to take the new pump apart and switch it around so that it would work with the TY395I engine.:thumbsup: I'm so excited that I can get back to work.
