I did call, and was disappointed that they, the Power Trac Company closed shop and everyone went on vacation. Just right when I needed to order some parts. They could have slipped in a post telling anyone that was interested. I was also wondering why no one at PT is interested in the Power Trac forum.

Just a point of information about PT being closed for a week for vacation. Iam from Charleston WV just north of Va. It is a common practice in the coal fields and mining support business to close for "miners Vacation" during this time. Since PT is related to the mining industry that may be the reason. As to why they do not use the forum? Not sure but I do know they are not internet savay but build one great utility tractor! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We don't know that they are not interested in this forum. We just know that they don't provide feedback and interaction here. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As for closing for a week, the Hummer plant closed this week, too, so it is not just small companies that do this.

Closing manufacturing facilities for vacation is still common practice in Eastern PA also.

However, I am a little dismayed that PT does not provide parts support during the vacation week. I believe that PT should rethink that part of the operation.

I agree that parts and product support closing is a poor idea. As a professional that relies on my equipment for a living, I can not afford to go a week without even speaking to someone to order a part. This has happened to me in the past with Power Trac, and when it did, my machine was down for a good week. I was forced to spend money on a rental unit. All I ask is to have a skeleton crew just to process parts and perhaps help with some troubleshooting. I am pleased with their products and really have not had to order many parts at all, but when you do, BIG $$$!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Buying a PT is like getting married!! It's a package deal!! The product, the service, the parts - the body, the mind, the personality!!!!

There are always some surprises after the ceremony, like vacation time or internet savvy! You just pray that the surprises do NOT include the hair, the breasts, or a leg coming off at bedtime, or that you find a pair of something where there isn't supposed to be any!!!!

As long as their employees are getting paid during the vacation, good for PT. To often in todays stockholder driven society, we forget that people make companies work or not work.

Yardscaper and others, PT should educate every owner with a flyer in every part that they send out year round letting them know when they will not be available, so you can plan as best you can.

Again, it is a package deal! This much money, this much vacation, this health insurance, this bonus, this overtime rate, this pension, this many sick days, these hours!! It all adds up to what the employer can afford to give to get the labor he needs, and what the worker is willing to accept for the labor he gives! Too little, no workers - too much, no job!!

Many negotiations start with a high hourly rate, then deduct from that for each optional benefit. Some places give high pay with few benefits, while others don't pay so much but have extensive benefits! The PT workers may get a higher hourly rate only when working, or they may get a slightly lower hourly rate but with paid vacation and sick days! It's a package deal!!

Yardscaper, as a businessman who has purchased a commercial product, you have every right to that expectation, in my opinion. Parts availability and product support levels can make or break a business--on both ends of the producer-user chain.

For planning purposes...
We should note that PT is closed TWICE every year for one week each. The second time is, I believe, for the week of Thanksgiving.

PT operates in a very European manner, with factory-wide, top-to-bottom closings twice a year. It takes some getting used to, along with some planning to cover (most) problems which might arise during their closing periods. At least they are only closed for one week each time, not the 4+ weeks which are more common in the EU.

Thanks to you and TBN apparently PT doesn't need a flyer to get the word out!! Thanks for the info!!

They could make a posting on the front page of their web page about the closing.

Or we could just plan our lives around PT and take 2 weeks off each year as well! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

My in-laws worked in factories all their adult lives. They are use to the whole factory closing scenario. I was from a different background. My dad took rarely took vacations and my mom had the whole summer off; she was a teacher. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

At least we all now know to plan accordingly for next year. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Amen, MR!
I like that idea a whole lot. Slightly on a tangent to the thrust of this thread, but not too far off, I hope.

After living abroad for awhile, I have learned to appreciate that philosophy much better. In a nutshell, the European mentality is "work to live," while the US mentality is quite the opposite, "live to work." It bears out in all sorts of statistics from vacation times to family priorities. Doubt it will catch on here anytime soon, however...
