Welcome to the power trac forum . I also have the 422 and I love it. The finish mower does good for me in normal grass mowing but when you get into high thick grass or weeds the brush hog would do a much better job. Have fun with your pt and be careful using it till you become familiar with its limitations as it is different to operate than most machines.

I have the mini hoe and love it. I would not recommend going with a bucket larger than the 9 inch as you put tremendous strain on the pivot pin. Go back and look at my post titled mini hoe project and you will see the amount of digging this little giant did.

I have been using the 48" mower all summer...and the grass is practically growing right before our eyes with all the rain we have had and the cooler than normal temps. The first time I mowed the grass was a little on the high side but the mower handled it fine although did leave a slight wind-row a few times. I need to mow apprx. every 5 days right now and as long as I can get to it within that time frame the mower does just find, mulches well and no wind-rows. I have used the mower in some of the small pasture areas that the horses graze on and the mower will slow down considerably in VERY thick areas. This is when I will make 2 passes...but I would not let the grass get that high in the "yard" area. If I finish cut the whole "yard" it will take me about 2 hours....this is probably 3 acres....but keep in mind I have many obstacles to mow around(shed, garden, several fruit trees, horseshoe pits, etc) and there are 2 areas that are fairly steep so I will really take my time there! When the PT arrived and I first saw the mower I immediatly thought I was going to regret the choice of 48" instead of the 5 footer.....but not anymore.

oh no , why would you opt for the brush hog over the mower , just curious as i just ordered the 60'' mower for my 425 .......

Don't panic! I've had the 60" mower on my 425 going on the third season. Same blades, never sharpened. Still gives a great cut. I am extremely pleased with it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Here's a problem I've been having this year mowing 1.5 acres of former farm land: the mower deck constantly gets filled up with wet, sticky mulched (or partially mulched) grass. This is on my little JD L130 lawn tractor with the mulch cover on. Sharpening the blades often does not help. I've read that this is a common problem on this type of land because the grass that covers most of it is really just a form of highly drought resistant weed that can store a lot of water and this is what causes the problem. I find it's a bit of a chore to clean out the deck twice in 2 hours of mowing, sort of like you spend 2 hours mowing and 1 hour doing maintenance on the tractor. If I don't clean the deck the mower can get so bogged down that it sounds like it's going to stall the engine. How's the PT handle this problem?

I think MR mentioned that he cleans his mower deck by raising it and simply pressure washing it. That in itself would be a better situation than having to fiddle with 6 or 7 hitch pin clips, dragging the deck out and scraping all the junk off.

If I had a power washer I would do that also, but for now I simply take a putty knife and scrape away the grass that has clung to the underside of the deck due to moisture..takes all of 5 minutes with the deck raised and supported(that beats crawling under the belly mower of the Farmall!). Even with the accumulation while mowing(it's mainly around the curved undersides) I have not seen any deterioration in the cut or mulching capabilities.

MOWER DECK CLEANING

There is a solution that you might try. A lot if the commercial people, mount a water jet just above the blade tips, one jet per blade. All the jets are connected on the top to a quick connect water hose attachment. Hook up the hose, turn on the water, and activate the blades. The water, plus the blades running at high speed, does a fairly good job of cleaning the underside.

Every time I finish mowing I pull up in the driveway, lift the mower deck to full height and use a common garden hoe upside down to scrape off most of the accumulation. That way I don't have to get under the deck. It leaves a pile of yucky goo that I then shovel up, put in a 5 gallon bucket and haul to the yard waste pile. I've been doing this for 3 summers now. A few weeks ago the wife says, "Why don't you do that in the back yard by the pile so you don't have to clean up the mess in the driveway?".......... My reply... "Because I'm an idiot, dear." /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Here's a picture of my mower deck at full lift height. Think you can get under there a little easier than your lawn tractor? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just be sure to block it up with something and use a long handled hoe like I do and you will be safe. It weighs enough to hurt you bad if it would fall on you. Imagine being under there and having someone or something bump the joystick into float... if you live, you are going to the hospital. And if the engine is running and the joystick gets bumped into power down, it will bring the weight of the deck and most of the tractor on you. In that case, I don't think you'll make it to the hospital. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Just use common sense and be careful. Off my safety soap box now. Come to think of it... standing on a soap box doesn't sound very safe, does it? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
