Re: Power Trac PT425 Long Day of Fun

I woke up this morning and the weather man said snow in the morning changing to rain with little or no accumalation. I have 6 inches on the ground and it is coming down very hard still. The worst part about it is my tractor is sitting at a friends house where I was doing some work. 1600 feet uphill tomorrow morning should be interesting.

Re: Power Trac PT425 Long Day of Fun

Just saw and article on rural living, road maintnance. My rake setup has the wheels between me and the rake. If I set them up in front it will be the exact same setup as the "Front Runner". I wonder if this will stop the hoping problem I have now when I push the rake instead of pulling it. I will try it this spring and let you know what happens.

Re: Power Trac PT425 Long Day of Fun

It would seem like pushing a rake would be difficult, unless its weight was resting on wheels in front of it. Then, as far as the rake is concerned, it is being pulled. Interesting. I'll wait for your findings.

You Power Trac fans out there. Like many I am inches away from buying a 20-25hp compact. I mostly mow but need a FEL and a brush cutter. How does your Power Trac do with mowing. I want a 60" (pref. rear discharge). My wife is particular about the finish cut. I want manuverability and comfort mowing 2-2.5 acres some of it hilly. I will be doing alot of mowing under a tree overhangs at the edge of the woods....back and forth hence my attaction to front mounting.
How about the loader. Do you feel limited by the 54" lift height.
Are these machines comfortable for long legs and long times?
Can you get in and out of them easily?
Are they bumpy like a zero turn?
Can you mow quickly?
Have you pulled a loaded trailer?
Last for now does anyone have the brush cutter.

thanks!

doggman,
Charlie and MossRoad plus others will answer most of your questions. I am in the process of obtaining a PT425 with many attachments. I did go to SDF to a trade show that PT was attending and drove everything and used most of the attachments. This proved to me this was the machine for me. Be sure to open up the home page for MossRoad.

I have the 60" finish mower, but have not used it yet. I am itching to get the grass growing and test it out. It is rear discharge. You cannot get a bagger for it, so be forewarned( I never bag anyway).

The 54" lift height is an issue if you have to load a pickup truck from the side. It cannot be done without a ramp of some sorts. So be aware of that as well. However, I rarely load a truck from the side. I do load a low trailer and that works fine. I can make dirt piles about 4' high no problem.

I am 6' tall with size 13 shoes and long legs. I have spent several one hour stretches on it with no discomfort at all. The reason that I have not spent longer stretches of time on it are that I get the jobs done so quickly. Really! No kidding! One day I spent a total of 4 hours on it moving lots of dirt and sod, but I was never on it for more than an hour and 10 minutes or so. I jsut kept finding things to do with it and getting them done.

Getting in and out is not too bad. There is a hump that you have to step over. And you will bump your head on the canopy once(twice if your a slow learner like me).

The ride is not too bumpy at all. No bumpier than any other machine that I have operated. The really nice feature is that it twists in the middle, so on uneven ground all 4 wheels stay on the ground. It is very high to get one wheel off of the ground.

My mowing experience is limitted to several hours on the 48" brush hog. I mowed quite a bit of very heavy brush in a very short time. I think it was three passes over a mile of trail. Cut some 1.5 inch saplings with ease.

And I have pulled a rubbermiad cart full of firewood, probably over 500 pounds, with ease. When I get my trailer hitch attachment welded up, I'll tow some heavier items.

You should probably read this entire thread( get several cups of coffee ). Many folks have asked the same questions as you and several owners have contributed LOTS of valuable information about the Power Trac 400 series.

If you have any other questions, feel free to jump in and ask.

I have the 60" finish mower. I used it two weeks ago to mow some winter weeds and fescue on 2 1/2 acres. It did a nice job. I don't know how it will do on heavy bermuda. There is an old junk pile on the neighboring property where the briars and honeysuckle vines have crept away from the confines of the junkpile. I raised the mower deck up as high as the fel would lift it and then lowered it slowly down over the weeds. Worked really well.
Yesterday I strapped a 25 gallon spray tank to the fork attachment and clamped a 14' spray boom to the front of the forks and then sprayed my 2 1/2 acre lot with Roundup in approximately 30 minutes.
I am 6'5" with size 15's. . I tried the fit of lots of compact tractors before I decided on the PT. The only one that I thought would be more comfortable than the PT was the NH TC series. My tractor does not have the ROP. This probably makes it a little easier to mount and dismount.

Be careful raising that mower with it running. I hit a large metal ratcheting tie down with the brush hog and it blew one of the gauge wheels to smitherines. And it threw all of the pieces all over the place. The tie down ended up about 50 feet across the highway. Even a small piece of brush could fly off and stick you right through the chest. If a blade were to let loose with the mower raised and it hit you it would probably, no, definately, kill you. It would be a better choice to knock down the brush with the bucket or forks, or even by setting the mower down on it without it running to get the brush to ground level, then coming back and attacking it with the mower on the ground. Read some of the threads here about brush hogging and mowing safety. Stay safe.
