OK I have been talked out of the PT425 by very experienced and informed owners on this forum who own and work them.

Now looking at suggested PT 1430 and also considering building my own articulated set up with a Deutz or Kubota engine and super low center of gravity and wider stance to suit my terrain. Use the positive attributes of the 1430, but with a wider stance for more stability. Think log skidder stability with quick attach plate to use all the wonderful PT attachments. I'll just form up the plate into large box sections with integral fuel and hydro tanks, and put the weight and strength down low and set the wheel motors out for better crab like stability.

Has anyone ever modified the 1430 by pushing the four wheels motor brackets out for wider stance? I'd like to hear from anyone that has a 1430. Maybe they are just fine the way they are.

If you are going to build an articulated unit, don't forget to allow for oscillation between the two halves also. Not only do the PTs bend in the middle side to side, the unit can also twist in the middle up to 12 degrees each way. For example, going across staggered parking bumpers or railroad ties, the front can be tipped down to the left by up to 12 degrees while the rear can be tipped up to the right by up to 12 degrees. This keeps more wheels on the ground more of the time.

Have you looked at the 1845 or 1860? They seem to meet your needs and unless you have experience building such machines I doubt you could duplicate one for the price PT sells them.

Maybe look for a used 1430, and then modify it. The bodies on these things last forever, and the Deutz motors do as well as long as they are maintained. You can then re-engineer it from there.

Starting from scratch would be an extremely difficult task IMO.

I don't know of any for sale right now, but they do pop up from time to time.

Thanks for the replies. DON has done a great job with that modification and it evidently had the anticipated results. The 1430 already appears to have a very low CG and the slight spread in the wheels with this mod gets it done.
Glad to see someone tried this successfuly. No need to reinvent the wheel:D

Has everyone had good service life with the Deutz engines? They run for weeks at a time on drainage pump sets down our way...Just never had one on any machinery I've had.

If anyone has a line on a used 1430 with low hours let me know, since I'm gonna cut/weld and paint anyway.

There was a guy out here in Washington who had either a 1430 or 45 that I looked at a few years ago...

You should call Terry. They have a list of people who are mulling over unloading there PT's that sometimes don't advertise or are not quite there yet.
