The problem with spraying blackberries (which I do do and love to do) that are as tall as mine are is that it really does not kill them off. You get better results by knocking them down, waiting for the new growth to start, and nailing it in October when the new growth is pulling its energy back to the rizome..

Thanks for the lauper link. Problem is that I have hundreds of alders (thousands) Clipping them one at a time will be the death of me. going to go borrow my neighbors D4

Ya know, down the road they have this three foot diameter solid iron ball, and some anchor chain that looks like it came off of a WW I destroyer. They connect a D4 to each end of the chain and just drive through the brush.

Presto! The land is clear, and the brush is in a nice easy pile.

:)

Have fun with the D4. Sometimes it really does help to have the right tool.

All the best,

Peter

P.S. I think that the ranch was about 40,000 acres...

Are you sure the guy isn't dragging an active old mine? That would clear the land for sure...

I saw something like that in a story about Australian land clearers. For some reason, they had a huge spike of some kind sticking out of the 'south' end of the ball.

They used something similar, when I worked on a ranch in Africa. I have seen them with dead weight, and with what are basically anchors.

The goals are to
a) keep the chain low enough not to go over the brush
b) keep the chain tight enough to rip out the brush

Dead weight, anchor, hook, all serve to keep the chain tight and low, which rips out the brush, instead of riding over it.

The ones that I saw used in Africa were enormous Cats. I have no idea what model they were, but they looked like the ones that you normally see only in large open pit mines.

Needless to say, you it is good to know that you won't be hitting rock outcrops...

All the best,

Peter

This thread is going in different directions. How about closing out this one and starting a new one that is on subject.

Boy, here's a neat website. Check outthe pictures. I think there's one there that is similar to what you are talking about, plus some other neat land clearing tools.
