It's partly a question of how young you are & how easily the wood you use splits.
Doug fir doesn't split real easily & in my 50's I got tennis elbow from splitting. Rented a splitter & split in one afternoon what I used to split in a couple weeks of evening work. That sold me.
Got a well used splitter (from a rental outfit) that ran about 4 or 5 years before the engine gave out. Replaced it with a new B&S & it works great.
Make sure the bed fits your height OK. Mine is about 6" low, which makes for a lot more bending. Also, if you have wood that is too big to lift, make sure you can tip it vertical.

We have a 3 point hitch log splitter for the farm. You can't beat it. There is no extra motor to worry about plus like JimR said you can raise it to the height that is comfortable for you. The splitter has been modified with a 4-way wedge and a table on both sides of the wedge so that when the logs are split you don't have to bend down to pick them back up makes it a pleasure to split wood.

I thought long and hard about this before opting for a stand alone despite the extra engine to care for. Bottom line for us is I use the tractor to harvest trees and cut them into rounds while the wife runs the splitter next to the woodshed. If I had a 3PH splitter we could only do one task at a time.

We used a gas engine splitter for a long time, the engine wore out so for Christmas my wife bought a DR electric splitter. This thing splits what ever I throw at it, 6 month no questions asked return, 4 year warranty. I have split about 5 cords of wood with it no problem at all, cuts time since it has on the lever a fast travel speed and then a split speed, so if you have short rounds it doesn't take forever for the ram to reach the round.
I pull logs up to the shed I store wood in with my tractor, cut them and split in the same place and stack. Most wood I use has been down for 2 years since I had the place logged.
They say the DR will do up to 16 inch diameter logs I have done way bigger.
The thing I like is if the weather is bad I can split inside the building and close the door to stay warm since there are no fumes or noise really.No gas to run out and buy, no fighting with a cold engine, just push a button and hold a lever down and they cost less than half of a gas powered splitter.
This is one purchase I am glad the wife made.
