pressed in zerk fittings removal

I have a few of these on my mott flail mower and some won't take any grease.

I'm assuming I can just put a vise grip on it and pull but is there a better way to remove them without trashing them.

I've had some luck chucking them in a cordless drill and spinning them until they come out. Not always successful, and only saved less than half that I tried. Good news is they are cheap.

Try heating them up with a propane torch then try to grease them.
Sometimes you can free them up to take grease.

Use a slide hammer. They pop right out. An old coupling adjusted tight works on the straight ones. I say old coupling because I had to drill mine out and retap it to fit the threads on my slide hammer. On the angled fittings, use a fork attachment on the slide hammer.

If you don't have a slide hammer, a nail puller will probably work.

CCWKen's suggestion is a good one. Don't worry about damaging the nipple as pressed in fittings should only be installed once.

I happen to have a slide hammer that has an adapter for vice grips. I will try that thanks. Both u-joints that came with the mower shaft are missing the threaded zerks so I will get new pressed in zerks at the same time as those ones.

I have the proper tool for installing them but an appropriately sized socket (preferably impact) can also be used to drive them in square without damaging the nipple.

Agreed. just knock them out. They shouldn't have used those type anyways but in todays (cheap) :thumbdown:way of doing things it save the company money at your expense. Just tap the thing and put in a REAL zerk , the way they should have in the first place.

You can get some better ones when you replace them.

The last time I tried to use a socket to drive in the zerk it munged up the mouth of the socket and pretty much ruined it. I've since gotten a zerk driver tool.

As for removing the pressed in zerks... just try greasing them normally. That's when mine have always popped out on their own.
