Preventing well pump flood

The one from Skillings interupts power to the pump. There is a water sensor on the floor. The unit is all self contained, no external power required.
I agree 100% with Valveman about the low flow switch.

Simply install a low pressure cut-out switch at the pressure tank. Cheap, simple and good insurance against floods. Also, a water alarm in the basement is a good investment too.
This switch is definitely a good thing but keep in mind, it only protects against a zero pressure (massive) leak. Most leaks, like a washing machine hose failure, won't allow the pressure to drop low enough to trip the low pressure switch. Ask me how I know.

Detection switches, like the Skillings product, also work well as long as the sensor is placed in the right spot. It is possible for water to flood one area of the house and not others.

Turning power off to the well pump is always a good idea when away for an extended period. Unfortunately, there could still be water damage from the water remaining in the pressure tank.

The best idea is to do what I do, and turn off the main water shutoff valve when you're away. This works for both well and city water supplies.

When home or just out for a few hours, I rely on this remote water detector smartphone alarm:
