Hey All,

I'm in the Kentucky area and have been looking at 30-45HP tractors for the last month or two. Based on dealership representation in my area, I've pretty much limited it down to Kioti and Kubota. That being the case, I'm looking at both new and used tractors. I got quotes for new Kubota 3200 & 3800, and 3240 & 3949 tractors, and then found a Kioti dealership that I liked to give me a quote for new DK35, 40se, and 45se tractors (all tractors above are HST).

I really liked the Kioti dealership, but the prices they gave me seemed way out of the ballpark. It looks like the DK35 is about $18K (plus a $4,100 FEL); the DK40se is about $19,200 (plus a $4200 FEL) and the DK45se is ~$22K (plus $4200 FEL). That's several thousand more than what I'd expected to pay for the Kioti's, and frankly out of where I want to be with the tractor.

My challenge is this: If the prices are way out of whack, I'm concerned about going with a used Kioti because my service prices may be as out of range as the new sales.

To put it to comparison, the Kubota dealer (I liked both dealerships I've visited so far of theirs) quoted me a price of ~$19,300 for a L3800 with the 724 FEL and loaded rear tires. He quoted me at about $24,500 for the 3940 with FEL. I don't want to get into a DK45se vs. L3800 vs L3940 discussion (although that's always good info to have), but I expected the Kioti to be the obvious winner where the pocketbook was concerned and it isn't turning out that way at all.

I see a couple dealers offering Kioti packages much cheaper - Is the price that my Kioti dealer quoted out of line, and if so, should I be concerned about the future price of services if I go with a used Kioti?
Thanks,
-Scott

I think those prices are way out of whack. They sound like Kioti list prices.

In general, if you have a good quote on a Kubota L3940 with FEL, the DK40se should be about $4000 less expensive. If a Kioti dealer discounts the same as a Kubota dealer off list, you should be getting quotes about 15%-20% less than the HP equivalent Kubota Grand L.

One problem with the Kioti dealership network is that a lot of the dealers are still small outfits that just think the Kioti list price is so much lower than the Kubota list that they don't need to discount. They ignore the fact that Kubota dealers discount to compete with JD. I'd check another regional Kioti dealer or alternatively look at the equivalent Bobcat tractors (CT440 = DKf=40se etc).

He said he was authorized to give me 10% off the MSRP, so those numbers should be slightly under list prices (also, I'm going from memory on the prices, but they are pretty close to what I have written down at home after our discussion). However, you are right that it's pretty dang close to list price. I'm not insinuating that he is trying to rake me over the coals...just trying to figure out how to work with dealers and identify what dealers are 'good' vs. not as good. These guys appeared to be very friendly and straightforward, but the prices really surprised me. Now I'm somewhat wary of purchasing either a new or used Kioti, if the prices are going to be surprising.

The other issue besides dealer pricing is Kioti rebate or free loader program. Those vary by month and model.

10% discount is not really that great. 15% is achievable even on hot models when dealers want to move product. Wait until the end of the month or let him know that you will buy the Kubota if the discount is not better. He is just doing the natural thing any dealer would do which is to maximize his return. You have to be just as firm and insist on a better deal. No reason for you to just stick with your local dealer either.

I was surprised at the Kioti prices as well, I looked at the dealership in Clarksville, TN and priced a DK35 and they were not that far off from the L3800 prices. That dealer is over an hour away so the small price difference was not worth the drive for parts or service down the road over the life of the tractor for me.

You didn't mention the ongoing $4500 rebate. Is that in these numbers? You should be able to buy the 45 combo in the 22+ range which would make sense, I think, if you haven't taken the discount out of these numbers.

Another point: The DK35se is a slightly smaller tractor with much less powerful loader so I can understand a $1200 upcharge for the DK40se. However, the DK45se is absolutely identical in every way to the DK40se except that the identical engine block has an additional 200cc bored out and therefore also larger pistons. That is it. How Kioti can charge over two thousand bucks for a manufacturing change that cost them about fifty bucks is difficult to fathom. The difference in engine output is precisely four horsepower. I find it mind boggling that anyone would pay that much extra for four hp and I don't understand how the dealers are able to sell the 45se at that much of a premium.

Handcuff,

Exactly where are you in Ky/Louisville area? I'm in Cincinnati and bought in Kenton Co., KY, just off I-275 a few miles (10 I think??). Probably about an hour for you if you are close to the NE part of Louisville. My dealer used to be a Kubota dealer....interestingly. I'll PM you my dealer's contact information. I think it would be worth the drive if you can get a deal w/ him. I was looking at the L3940HST.....I have a DK40SE HST:D

While I would hope you would have a great dealer in your local person, you can get parts from others and hopefully they won't care where you bought if you really need any service in the end....I've got 125 hrs on mine so far and I've had no issues (knock on wood...PLEASE ). I'm in the middle (29 & 31 miles respectively) b/w 2 dealers...1 in KY and the other to the East of me. Kenton, KY had what I wanted on the lot (actually in the crate) so it was a fairly easy decision at the time.

Good Luck!!!!

Scott,

I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a DK40se HST myself. Did you ever get an answer from the dealer on the price regarding the $4500 rebate Kioti is offering, or do the prices you quoted already includ this rebate? Once I get a price from my dealer, I'll be posting it here to let you know how our dealers are comparing.

Thanks,
Mike

I didn't get an answer from him on that, but didn't pursue to hard either. I was waiting to close on the land (where I'm putting the tractor) and we go finish the paperwork tomorrow. Following that, I'm starting to build my house...

I think I may rent a tractor for a day or two this fall, then rent another one in the winter/spring to help me decide what I want. There's a lot that looks good on paper, but I am a neophite when it comes to tractors. I'm guessing a couple hours in a seat on my own land will tell me a lot about what I do/don't want.

Go with the Kubota stay away from the Kioti I own both and the kioti is nothing but trouble. The Kubota is the best money spent even if is more money.

You may have had a bad experience but that is not generalizable. Looking at the Kioti and Kubota forums they both seem to be excellent tractors and each has its share of problems. I don't believe there are many unhappy Kioti owners though all agree that the Kubota dealership network is superior (and that Kioti's cost $4000-6000 less for the same hp tractor so that is the tradeoff).

coobie,
The whole point of forums is to get many different opinions and views and then use ALL that information to make an informed decision. I for one welcome mojoo77's opinion, even though I disagree. These type of comments discourage people from sharing their experiences, the experiences that make these forums useful and fun.

mojoo77, it would be helpful to give a few more details, what type of trouble have you had with your Kioti, what model tractors do you own?

As for me, I love my CK30 HST TBL, but I've had more than my share of troubles. This is why buying a dealer is as important as buying a brand sometimes. See my thread for the issues I've been having here: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/kioti-owning-operating/218090-my-new-ck-30-a.html

My CK 30 is a much more capable machine than the JD 955 I left behind, and from everything I saw, a much more capable machine than any other in my price range, including Kubota. I approached it a little differently, I looked at the amount of money I was willing to spend and then compared the tractors that fit into that range. If you do that, you'll see you're comparing Kioti models to Kubota models that are just not equal, the Kubota will be a much lighter machine with less hydraulic power, less features etc. Instead of looking at Kioti being 4-6K less than Kubota, look at what you get (for all manufactures) dollar for dollar, the choice becomes much easier.

I think Coobie was responding partly because there were no details or follow up from the "troll" poster. The guy may have a legitimate gripe and bad experience but in that case he should bother to let us know the details rather than just rag on the brand. I am sure there are people who have had bad experiences with every brand of tractor and those experiences are useful when outlined in detail. Opinions are not so helpful when you just say "Yankees suck" (which happens to be true but as the Red Sox just blew a game yesterday too I will not elaborate just now:eek:).

IslandTractor,
I agree that it's not helpful to simply bash something with no details, when I see that type of post, I usually discount it completely. I simply think it is more productive and respectful to request more info as opposed to name calling.
