Do the hydrostatic drive system and hydraulic system share the same fluid on the 5K series?

Ouch! I guess it really pays to shop around. Don't buy cheap hydraulic fluid because it may draw in moisture, but the price they quoted you is nothing short of robbery.

I called a local nursery the other day asking how much they got for a cubic yard of loam. The woman answering the phone cheerfully quoted me $37.50/yd., you haul. I called the gravel pit down the road from me, they charged me $11.50/yd. plus $50 delivery for 16 yards.

Hi Joel,

Yep, it's all the same fluid. It's interesting though, there is a separate filter for the hydro and the hydraulics. Maybe because of the different pressures?

Curt. Interesting setup, I really dont know much about CUT's. *Ususally* when the hydro drive and differentials share the same lube, it's a heavier motor oil. Typically 30,40 or 50wt multi viscosity oil. Tufftorq's use 10w-30 or 10w-40 (small units), where hydro-gear uses 15w-50 or 20w-50 (which ever). Ingersoll hy-drives ran 15w-40 & those had hydraulic spools sharing the same lube. The diff held it's own gear oil. If your CC specs "CC drive system plus" it's most likely a synthetic blend 15/20w-50. I know that stuff is $32/gal as that's what I lost when I spun-off the trans filter /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif! The next time I change (prolly 100hrs or 2-3yrs from now), I'll use Mobil-1 20w-50 on my 5.7qt capacity CC 2544.

( ( My manual just calls for Cub Cadet hydraulic transmission fluid. It's nice how they are very vague about this. TCS told me that there are only two kinds. I have (2) 5 gallon buckets in my garage right now. One is Valvoline and the other is Traveller. Both say "Premium Universal Trans Tractor Fluid" on the outside of the container. The foam pre-filter can be blown out with an air hose. I would do the same to the air filter till it becomes too dirty to clean. My 72 inch high lifts cost me $75.00. They are not thin cheap blades either. They come in a kit with new bolts and spring washers. I keep an extra set on hand so I don't have to worry about keeping mine sharp all the time. I just swap them out and sharpen the other set when I get a chance to. I tried crossing your air filter number on Donaldsons and Wix, no luck on either. )

Is it red in color ?? and what would the Cub part number be in the service manual that they suggest? )

Mine is light yellow almost clear. The part number is 737-3035 different number than the smaller CUT.

( Maybe the pricing on Cub filters and fluids is high, but I cannot justify trying to save a few $ after I have spent thousands of $ on a new tractor. We research, demo, and think about what tractor to buy for months, even years then we write a big check or make monthly payments and then we are going to obsess about what filter and what fluids we will put on and into our tractors all in an effort to save a little bit of money every 50 or 200 hours of operation. )

To each his own. But if you were paying $80.00 for a Cub Cadet air filter and could buy one from Donaldsons for $40.00 or a Wix for even less, would you go and spend that $80.00 just because you think Cub Cadet should be the only parts that you should use on your tractor? Not me, never again will they bite me that hard.

JimR,

Your machine is more Mitsubishi than Cub, or Mits under Cub's clothes....correct me if I'm wrong. You most likely have a few more options either by parts from Mits's or other synthetic fluid readily available from TSC and the like...
The machines made by Cub use the sythetic blend that would be the garden tractors (2000 to 3000 series), 5000 series and some of the 7000 series (not all of them) for example...
I have found no one who successfully found an alternate, some have said they will but never heard back from them ever again....Many folks have asked, so far no solution worth

Jtkub,

You lost a gallon when you switched the filter? what happened there, did you answer the phone during the process? <just kidding> its a slippery mess I know /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's interesting, the local dealer I buy from always steers me toward Stens oil filters and Fleetgard hydro filters. The guys at the counter will tell you their about 30% cheaper. I have a great comfort level based on their recommendation.

I just got an Agri Supply catalog today and saw they had the air filter for $3.99 and precleaner for $1.09, have to give them a try. They carry a lot of OEM and non OEM blades also. Their 60" blades were around $10.

I'll have to give them a call and see if they have a cross for the blade I'm lookin for.

On another note, did they use the "window or sight glass" for tractors other than the 5000 series. I changed those filters today and could not determine the level to save my life.I figured I'd just remove the sight glass to be sure it wasn't overfilled and it was, a bunch. It's a poor design, hard to read but now that the fluid is at the right level, it's a little easier. It came overfilled from the factory or got overfilled at the dealer.

Give me a dipstick, it's much easier to read. Or at least make the sight glass large enough to be more visible!

I slipped my nice dirty oil change pan under the diff, spun off the old filter, reached for my new filter only to realize it was across the garage on the workbench /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif! By the time I got my butt there and back the trans basically emptied out the filter base /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. Oh well... That's what I get for not asking here first!

I didn't know that CUB still made any of their own machines. I thought MTD was making the little ones for them also. Yes, mine is a Mitsubishi.
