Cub builds the 5000 series as well as the 6284 which was the 7284 last year.

Yes, to each his own. I will gladly pay more for Cub filters and fluids. It keeps me in front of the dealer and I think that might be one of the reasons I get great service from him. I'm not going to nickle and dime on filters and fluids. It's not worth it to me.

When I am ready for my next tractor purchase I'm sure I will get a good deal. He knows I'm not there to just buy a tractor and never see him again. I buy all my parts, filters and fluids from him. It works for him and it works for me, the dealer makes a fair profit and I get great service and fair pricing.

My local dealer could care less about the little guy. There are no deals to be made in Ma. For some reason the dealers must think anyone that wants a tractor is a gentleman farmer and will pay whatever they want for one. So I put the extra money right in my pocket. If you want a deal in Ma. you had better plan on making it out of state.

Viking - I once shared your ideals in regards to my dealer. It has happened twice to me in my tenure, with two different establishments, where they stood staunchly behind their product and none was better than what he sold. A few years later, one went out of business and the other switched to a completely different brand. So much for customer/dealer loyalty on my part. If nothing else - remember one fact - he's not in business to just give it to you at cost. If he's too high, there is always another dealer just down the road!

Why is it that two different CUT manufacturers can share the same hydrostatic tramsmission(Tecumseh for example), and can insist that only their fluids are acceptable? I've had a few different brands and I am not brand loyal. I buy decent filters from the cheapest source, always use JD Hydro oil or equivalent properties in the JD category from the chain farm stores. Never had a problem. I tend to think that we want only the best for our new investment and spend a lot of money uselessly.

Face it, you just bought a tractor with one of the best engines, one of the best transmissions, front axles are forged iron, and a thick mower deck. Look across the board and you'll find every decent tractor in existence today. If a tractor manufacturer can't be specific as to what it's oil consists of as far as this and that requirement - it is trying to screw you to the wall as I see it.

I've never gotten less than 18 years out of any of my CUT's and it is usually some inert piece of plastic crap in an engine that led to it's demise.....i.e, a compression release gear or similar. Besides that, I wanted a new toy after that long of time!

You can't go wrong with judicious service and more than the manual recommends naturally. Nothing will wear out a machine faster than a dirty air filter....trust me.

Well, here's from my recent records on three different tractors and their hydraulic oil prices. Keep in mind the 5000 series takes 20 quarts when serviced.

Cub Cadet, Hytrans, $1.35 Qt

New Holland hydraulic oil, $1.54 Qt

Cub Cadet, Drive System Plus, $7.91 Qt

So I guess if I stop at the gas station and the gas has bumped up to $12.12 a gallon, (a comparable increase), I should just happily hand over the money because I want them to be in business next week and they need to make a profit.

If you think about it, Cub has been making the garden tractors for 45 years and is still able to keep most folks using their fluids exclusively. Keepin a secret that long, they oughta be workin for the CIA.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Its pricey but to compare at least oranges to oranges, price out standard synthetic auto oil from Mobil 1 or another brand, and the 7.95 price isnt so shocking....
The older Cubs use Hytran a redish color and available from everybody. Nothing special about that fluid and very common...

I would use a alternate subsitute if I knew of one that was a direct replacement or equal....so far based on a few years of asking, I do not feel comfortable on the answers or suggestions. My warranty is up, and I dont care if I make a mistake and blow it up. I would just get another /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif but the point to make is nobody has come up with an equal.....
So there is rests for me at this time....

Curt, from what I've seen, the CC hytrans and the CC drive system plus are different lubes all together. Hytrans is more like an ATF or typical light hydraulic oil, where the newer drive system plus has a heavier motor oil look, feel, smell, taste to it (just kidding on the taste /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif!)

Well, how would you know what to compare it too. What would the specs be, I guess that's my point in this discussion, if the manual gave a spec you could decide if you wanted to pay their price or not. Maybe it's a high grade synthetic that is really worth the asking price.

I'm betting that the dealers are all around the same asking price for the stuff. I just get suspicious whenever I see the price on something go to 6X the original and there is no second source.

I did price Amsoil synthetic for a comparison and it's about the same cost, but it's pure synthetic and has specs!

I really am happy with the tractor, it's an awsome mowing machine. I bought two new Cubs the same day at an auction. I got the 5252 for $5100 with a 60" deck and a 3204 for $3000 with a 44" mulching deck. I kinda stole both of those tractors so maybe I shouldn't be whining about oil I won't need for two years anyhow.

Actually, I was at a gun show and my wife won the bids on the two tractors, I had prescreened the tractors being auctioned and gave her pricing and she likes to bid, I don't know which of us was happier /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK, it was me!

If what I *suspect* is correct, 'hytran' is nothing more than a $1-$2/qt off the shelf hydraulic oil, where 'drive system plus' is a $2-$4/qt semi synth/synthetic blend motor oil. Unless you can get insider info from the lube vendor or manufacturer (CC), you will never know the specifics on any of this.
