Price of a cord of firewood

That's about the cost of a full cord supplied in log length over here in northern NY...Ranges anywhere from $27-$33 a face cord depending how well the pack the rack on the truck.
By the time I buy my logs, work them up and haul them to the customer, maintain my equipment, at $80/face cord, I figure I'm hauling in a grand total of $5 an hour...I'm thinking of buying a second mattress right now since the first one's stuffed with the profits;-)

Well I kind of equate my time with the exercise that I need. Cheaper than going to a gym. Closer too.

Smells better too. Downside: can't watch the college girls in their Zumba class.

Most ads in the local paper run around $100 per face cord here. We put radiant heat in the basement and workshop slabs and run an Empyre indoor wood boiler. Nice dry heat and quiet. We burn about 4 full cord (12 face cord). We cut our own from downfalls each winter. Good exercise.

When I was growing up, we had seventy acres of our own woods behind us, and we burned about seven cord a winter, all in fireplaces in an ancient stone house. Boy you get those big stone hearths all warmed up and the next morning it would still be toasty and welcoming.

In a year or two I'm going to be moving and buying some land/new home further South. Since I love to work with firewood, yes for the exercise, and also for the fun of using the tractor to haul falldowns out of the woods.
So wherever I go, it's got to have woods. And some fields of course for farming.
If one doesn't have to pay for the logs, heating with wood is a no brainer.

Here in So Oregon, we have mostly pines. It sells now for about $150 a cord and about $200 per cord after December. Hardwoods sell for $250-300 per cord if you can find it. I have to clear my land so I will have plenty of wood to cut, stack and sell. Next year, I'll bring it to my house in the city (Klamath Falls) and sell it out of my backyard.

Fortunately, it is only some counties in CA that have wood burning days. Sacramento County is one of them. Here in El Dorado county (next door), no such thing. There are so many folks living in the foothills and mountains that use wood heat, they couldn't enforce it if they tried.

Average cost is $225-$275 for seasoned oak. Some folks here like to charge a lot more, hoping to cash in on anyone not doing their homework.

Mostly, I use wood cut from my own property but if I see someone on Craigslist who, for a few dollars, wants to get rid of a pile that is taking up space in their yard or even for free, I'll go for it.

Yep, that's the way I look at it too. My time outside cutting wood is invaluable to me. It keeps me in tip top shape, puts me in the outdoors and the product of that is free heat.
