I understand your point but wonder what landscaping task on one acre of property (the house takes up some of that) could not be done with a tractor of less than 25hp. I could imagine a 7510 TLB or BX24 having no trouble at all with those types of tasks. And, with the money left over, he could buy specialized implements to do the work better.

Also, remember this is in the Boston metro area. No big ranches around here so the resale of smaller subcuts and CUTs would be easier than trying to sell a 30+hp machine.

Thanks for the info nd opinions, the property is a "tougher" lot there was alot of blasting so there are rocks all over the place that could be too big for a bx type machine. The house occupies about 5ksqft of a 46ksqft lot some of that is a steep hill that i want to stump and grub and the rest is fairly flat but could use several hundred yards of fill to get level. I also have to decomission a septic tank and tie in an existing home to the city with an jector pump. I have borrowed a bx22 to do some work and it was handy but the FEL just did not have much power when it came to moving/lifting a full load of heavy dirt or stone.
What do you folks think about the prices i have gotten for the new and used machines that i have looked at so far? Like i said my plan is to sell in a year or so I already have a few simplicity tractors to mow snowblow with so this kubota would be for a specific use

If you want more FEL capacity, you are probably looking at the 30hp machines. I have a Kioti CK20 TLB which has the FEL lifting capacity of many 30hp machines so a smaller CUT might still do the job. Backhoes are nice for getting the rocks out. If you are moving rocks etc as a primary job you may want to invest in a grapple or at least a grapple attachment to your bucket. I assume you are planning to put a toothbar and some chain hooks on the bucket of whatever you buy.

I also wonder if a skid steer might be more appropriate than a CUT in your situation. They are generally more powerful and obviously used a lot in the type of work you are planning. If you were planning to hang on to the machine I'd say a PowerTrac 425 would be great for hilly terrain and for the versitility of it's many attachments but you might lose a bit more money selling after a year.

I haven't looked at the WantAd for a few weeks and this is probably a slow time for used tractor sales but as you are planning to use the machine only for a year or so you might save a few bucks by getting something used. If you added 100-200 hours you would not lose much on the resale.

Your purpose seems to be rough landscaping and trenching, then selling the tractor after a year. For that I would buy stronger and older, where condition and hours are more important than age. Separate the rough, rock work from the smaller, future maintenance tractor. Whoever is digging the footer may have the right equipment for the rough-in of the landscaping. Also consider a tractor with box blade, and renting an excavator one day a month. On a slope, a backhoe on a small tractor can be hard to position or to stay in position. The 360 degree rotation of the excavator makes it a much more efficient digger, so on rental day you get a lot done with it. I own a small backhoe, and a used excavator would have been better, not more convenient but safer, quicker, easier, and almost as cheap. No one piece of equipment does everything well. Just my opinion. Joe
