Nearly all Rotary Cutters use gearboxes imported from one or two factories in China. A few used to come from Italy but China now has the business.

The only rotary mower that I know of that still uses American made gearboxes is the Brown 600 series.

Here is what a light duty cutter looks like when using it for much more than very small saplings. Needless to say, this is the reason I ended up with a Brown cutter.

Notice that the cutter is sitting on a flat deck trailer, and the deck itself is "cock eyed" close to 2".

PISTON: Excellent photos.

How many blade sets do you suppose you went through before RC achieved this "well broken in" condition?

Did you have to change/repair the gear box at any time?

Do you still mow with it?

Jeff,
I'm not sure how many blade set's went through it before I got my hands on it. I bought it from my neighbor who purchased it new. It was actually in really good shape when I bought it as he mostly only used it to mow his 4 acre field. Then he purchased a bigger, heavier duty mower when he sold this to me. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the original set of blades, I know I never replaced them.

I never had to repair anything other than the sheet metal. The gearbox is fine and filled with oil with no leaks. In fact the mower is still in fine shape operationally speaking. It needs the sheet metal straightened out but aside from that, and the "ugliness" of it, it's perfectly useable and will last a long time in the right conditions. To be fair, it's not the fault of the mower that it's in this condition. I didn't know any better when I bought it and never even new there were light duty, medium duty, and heavy duty applications. I just figured well "it's a Wood's, so it must be good". I guess you could say I was pretty ignorant at the time.

I honestly didn't use it all that much, but when I did use it, I didn't use it for it's intended purpose, which is light mowing in weeds and less than 1" material. Had I known better, I would have bought the same mower I bought the second time around.

I don't mow with it anymore, it has no place being on my tractor, and I'll never buy another light duty implement again, ever...even if that's all I'll "need" at the time.

I sold it for $800 a couple weeks ago, those pictures I took were when it was loaded up on the trailer ready for delivery. I wanted to make sure the new owner was aware of the condition it was in before I brought it to his house.

Don't worry, I have succumbed to this many times myself.

The ability to obsessively pour over the details has ruined me.

Ectually.....The research I did prior to ordering a Howse 16/18" Disc Harrow some would think obsessive too; but I learned a lot in the process. And the Howse is giving exemplary service.

How about those posts from PISTON? He probably has The Grail at his place.

I just called the Farmer's coop here in Knoxville, Tn.

The guy needs to price the cost of the chains for the thing, but I'm going to give Kodiak Medium Duty a try..... It's going to be $1,200 plus the chains. There is slight discount for the dirty one with minor surface rust.... I'll take that. $1,499 for the minty ones.

I'll report back on it when the deal is done.

As it is, I drive around with the post hole digger on the back. I have a found other uses for that post hole digger, so I leave it there. For example, I will slowly dig around medium sized trees with that hole digger (busting up the supporting roots) and then just push the tree over with the tractor!... no stump! (gotta be careful so as not to get the bit stuck between major roots or rocks)
