Printer/Scanner/Fax

I have a LexMark X75, basic cheap all-in-one, that I picked up at Wally World a couple of months ago for ~$40 on sale, I think they're normally under $60. It works and meets my limited needs. I have a higher resolution HP scanner and other printers, but this one has become my every-day workhorse. It has one-button scan or copy, or a fairly good control program on the computer. Being the cheapie, the computer has to be on to make a copy -- it scans into the computer, then prints. They have a more expensive one that makes copies without the computer being on, but since my computer is always on, I didn't need it.

It also does not have a built-in fax capability; it simply scans into the computer's fax program. I have a couple of dedicated fax machines already, so again, I didn't need that capability.

The only disadvantage is that when I tried to network to it from my wireless laptop, it turned off the copy and scan features, because those don't work over the network. I had to re-install it to get them back on in the computer to which it is hooked. Since I have another printer hooked to the same "base station" desktop, I just networked to it, instead, and no more problems.

I never had an all-in-one before; my basic concern was that if any one function broke, the entire machine had to be repaired/replaced. But at the price, this one is pretty much disposable.

BillyP,
I have an HP7110 and works great. I have a friend who has a HP 6110 and is also very pleased. Another friend has a Cannon which is highly rated and they are very happy. Now having said all of that none of these came with good OCR software. So if you want to scan a document then use the word processor to change something it may not work well if at all. I use other software to that. The copy and fax work like a charm ... also, the reason that I when to the HP7110 was the legal size flatbed scanner. Most folks may not need that and will be very happy using the page feeder to do legal size paper. You do need the document feeder in my opinion.
Anyway ... that's my 2 cents ...

Well folks, this morning I checked online at Sam's Club for that HP2400xi. It said it wasn't available, at the Sam's we were going to (closest Sam's is an hour and a half). When we walked in the door, they had about 50 or so, stacked up. So I got it after all /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To my surprise, the USB cable is included. I haven't had time to set it up yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Thanks to all.

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( I was looking at the HP PSC 2410XI but couldn't find any reviews. I did find reviews for the HP PSC 2410 though (all great reviews).

I'm guessing it's the same thing, except maybe the XI might be a newer model?

I believe that Sams Club is the only place that you will find a model ending in "XI". If you look at some of the HP laptops in Sams Club now you will find their model numbers end in "SC" (for S ams C lub). If you look at the laptops in Wal Mart you will find some that end in "WM", and so on. Best Buy, Circuit City, and others have made arrangements to have a lot of their laptops and such with a model name or number that is unique to them. That way you can no longer make them price match the other stores. The items have to have the exact same model name or number in order for them to honor their price match guarantees. For instance lets say you go into a Staples and say that you can get the HP2400xi elsewhere for $40 less than they are selling it for. The Staples employee will immediately know from the "XI" that you are pricing that item at Sams Club. Then they will tell you that the version that Sams Club sells does not have all the software that their version of the HP2400 has so they can not price match it. There may be times when there really is a difference in the bundled software but I have never found any difference. I rarely end up using any bonus programs that are included with printers anyway. Other times you get a better deal with the Sams Club version, as you were happy to find the USB cable included. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Billy:

I don't usually post on computer related questions because I am not computer literate, my wife is though. But.....

We have a Brother 7160 C. We have had it for a few years and the cats sleep on top of it all the time. It was one of the first all-in-one machines. It has never failed to work, always answerers the faxes and phone and does decent copying.

The big rub with any machine is the PRICE OF THE PRINTER CARTRIDGES.

Brother replacement cartridges are the cheapest and you can get the black cartridge separately. Most other machines have the printer cartridges bundled so you have to get the color cartridges with the black one. We use 3 black ones to one set of color ones.

From a cost standpoint, the Brother is the winner for us.

I think the CS ... XI... Destinate the options and software included with that model.

I actually got a HP 6110 xi from Costco a few months back. Works great so far, and the price was right.

Actually, the "xi" designation has nothing to do with anything other than where it's shipped and sold. Sam's doesn't have the market cornered on it. Even Best Buy has some "xi" versions that other local computer stores do not. In the past I've gone to the HP website and found the spec's for each to be identical. Recently, however, I didn't see a particular "xi" model listed so maybe HP has stopped listing them for such easy comparison.

The only difference between the 2400 and the 2400xi is the number of copies the copy function will make. I read it someplace but can't remember where.

I just got it set up and it works great. Except for the fax part, haven't tried it yet. The printer and scanner/copier is soooo much faster than my old ones. Of course, Window XP over 95 could make a difference too.

I've an HP 720 for 3 years. Have to occasionally do an alcohol job on it with cotton-tipped swabs, when it gives "paper jam" signals that are false. It needs another one right now. Does fine sending and receiving faxes and for copying pages.

Also have a Visioneer One Touch flat bed scanner. It's easy to use but is no good for doing slides or other stuff where you want to pick out detail, as its field of scan can't be adjusted to only scan small areas. Think its the Visioneer that has the better of the scan-to-text software. The HP won't scan photos easily nor will it do book pages. Easiest way to copy is to scan on the flat bed and print out on the HP720.
