I think map sites like Google Earth and Bing is also a cause for concern. Many of these people driving your road may have cased out the place beforehand online...and may already have an idea of what is on your property. It's scary thinking about it. People don't honor signs and our privacy has been posted online for everybody to see...

County mapping offices show the aerial photos. I think our county was doing it before Google. I downloaded a PDF file from the state this week that was showing broad band coverage. Boy were they wrong on available coverage. So wrong you really wonder if they were flipping coins to create the map.

What was interesting is that the PDF file would take an address or zip code and zoom to that location. Then show overlays including aerial photos. The photos were similar to what Google or the county GIS offers. Though it did not allow one to really drill down compared to the county or Google.

I have seen other PDF's put out by the state and/or county with this aerial photos.

Pandora's box has been opened....

Later,
Dan

What Google Earth provides (aerial photos) was already available. It's just way faster, easier & free using Google Earth. You don't have to get in your car, drive downtown, & pay for paper copies of aerial photos.

My own county also offers aerial photos online for free. Theirs aren't as quick-&-easy as Google Earth, but all the data's there.

Interesting thread.

I don't think signs work, but just to cover my bases, I have three no tresspassing signs at my gate. I keep my gate closed most of the time, but if I'm around the house I sometimes leave it open.

The gate solved all my problems, but keeping it closed is the only thing that has really worked.

Two most common excuses that I've had is that they are looking for their lost dog or they are looking for a friend and thought this was where he lived. I write down their license plate and make it obvious that I've done so. Then I reply to their questions. Most of the dog excuses are made up because they can't come up with a breed, name or description of the dog they are looking for. I had a couple who both replied at the same time with different answers to the breed of their dog.

Local crack heads are the biggest problem. They are in and out of jail, will steal just about anything, including gates. I've made a big deal of writing down their license plate, and even went and sat in front of their moble home and took pictures of their home and car sitting out in front of it so they could see me. I was very obvious in what I was doing, but never went on their land.

Thieves and tresspassers are very tempermental about others doing to them what they do to others.

Since then, I haven't seen them again.

Man you hit that on the head. The most beligerant and off the handle people I had to deal with were people trying to steal from the store I was working at.

I bought my house in May of this year. I have a 1035 ft gravel drive and ten acres. I can't see the road from my house. So far I have had one person drive all the way up to my house and turn around quick and drive back out. I have several signs and a cattle gate that I am too lazy to close. I will start closing it if I start getting more curious people. Right now with the snow and ice the curious have decided to not attempt my drive and the cattle gate is stuck in a large snowy ice berm. We have had 26.5 inches of snow so far in Spokane this year.

Yep RB. Think your hiding your shop over the hill with all your implements, nope, google earth will show it all and the roads to it. Then they can use google maps and actually see your drive.

I didn't read through all 9 pages...

I live at the top of a long private road - it's approx 1/2 mile long. There are 4 houses at the top and we're responsible for the road. I'm at the very top and have a governors loop and see strangers all the time. Yes it's annoying.

On the other hand, when we posted Private Drive signs, the delivery people stopped coming up to the house. We'd have to go pick up mail and deliveries too often for my liking. May not be important at all and my actually differ in your area, but keep it in mind.

Dad's 'Private Lane' sign didn't stop the Jehova's Witnesses but him answering the door, shotgun in hand, asking "What part of Private Lane didn't you understand?" put an ent to them.

The ROW was legally closed [7 years of non-use in PA] and the farmer who worked the field next to his property was told to plow up the road on his side. The next spring Dad had to use the tractor to pull out the embarassed State Trooper who couldn't read signs.

The field was real wet after the end of dad's driveway gravel andthe trooper car was in the mud up to the headlights...

You Dad is a better man than I am. My tractor tends to have mechanical issues if the job entails pulling the cops out of the mud.
