Some States Require USDOT Numbers

In select states (see green highlighted states or list below), all registrants of commercial motor vehicles, even intrastate and non-Motor Carrier registrants, are required to obtain a USDOT Number as a necessary condition for commercial vehicle registration.

It does show CT as one of the states but I wonder..
Am I still exempt since my truck is registered combination

JB

No, I don't beleive so.

I don't know if you have this, maybe you posted it.

just checking in. I tend to watch subjects like this and see what's going on every 6 months.

To be clear, what i'm asking about is for those of you that are non CDL, have a truck and a trailer, and are non comercial and private, hauling your own stuff, not for hire.. etc, under 26k#

any of you guys having any dot trouble or involvement? especially the 1 ton crowd which are possible hauling goosenecks that might at first glance look comercial. ie.. dually with gn and tractor?

so far I've had no challanges by dot or weigh stations even out of state. at least the southeast anyway.. fl, al, ms, ga, tx etc.

never stopped at a weight station, and have passed plenty with dot parked around it.. have seen them shoot out and pull other over.. so kow they are manned and looking.

anyone had any issues?

So Chris, what do you really want to know?

What you are legally bound to do/be in compliance with?
Or what you have a reasonable chance of getting away with not doing/complying with?

Aren't you glad you asked?

But does that mean all vehicles within the scope of the document (commercial) or all vehicles in general. If these questions are from a motor carrier perspective, "all" would be expected. But in the bigger picture, it doesn't seem to make sense. Weigh stations would have lines a mile long because every truck and suv with a trailer fits that.

I would go right past with my truck/trailer without hesitating.

Are they going to chase down every truck that passes it. Probably not but that doesn't mean they won't or that you are not supposed to stop.

Do they pull over everyone going 1 mile over the speed limit? No, but that doesn't mean they won't or can't.

Ok. Maybe you should read what you post:

Pay special attention to:
"Commercial motor vehicle means any vehicle operated in interstate commerce to transport passengers or property when the vehicle" Which means not personal use vehicles. Interesting that you cited that yourself, even though it doesn't agree with your statement.

So, it is not clear if the statement further down the document about weigh stations applies to all vehicles or only all vehicles covered by that document. Myself, I wouldn't read the "Maryland Motor Carrier Frequently Asked Questions" for information about my personal vehicles.

Wow, really?
8. What vehicles must go through weigh stations in Maryland?

ALL vehicles with a gross vehicle weight or gross vehicle weight rating of greater than 10,000 pounds must stop at open weigh stations. Only vehicles that are operating in commerce will be subject to a safety inspection.

Last time I checked, all usually means everything. There is no mention of it needing to be a cmv. I posted the #5 cmv section to adress others dot needs. (i guess you didnt see the first part of section 5 that can classify anything over 10001 lbs as commercial OR the part you reposted)
I was most interested in disproving your statement that an RV doesnt have to weigh in at any state by postibg faq #8. It clearly states, just like the MD state trooper verified in the DOT 1 on 1 saftey meeting I was required to attend that ANY vehicle over 10k MUST weigh in, so I dont care if youre in an RV or the freakin oscar mayer weiner mobile, you need to weigh. You dont need a saftey inspection if its not a cmv. So i dont know about other states but in MD thats the law and all I will comment on as I wont talk about what I do not know. If you still dont believe it I will dig up the md state police DOT liasons office number and let you get it straight from the horses mouth. Im done, have a nice day.

That is GCVW not GVW, different situation.

How is it any different than pulling a trailer with your pickup???? 10k is 10k.

The regs say over 10k so a pickup with trailer or a 1 ton dually both put you over 10k.

We have some vans at work with a 9600# rating and our smallest trailer has a 3500# rating, put them together and you are right in the DOT range. So the the vehicle alone is exempt but hook a trailer and you must be compliant. (the boss has some tickets to prove it!!!)

Our 1 ton stake is rated at 17900#, DOT again.
