The left brake locked up on my 750; the lever connected to the linkage is frozen. I pried the brake assembly out in-tact and unhooked the shoes. Lots of rust inside. I have used PB to try and loosen/remove the rust to free it up to no avail.

I think the shaft on the lever and shaft housing just needs to be really cleaned out, but I am unable to take it apart. It appears as though that, when assembled, the shoes hold the lever shaft in place and that nothing else holds the shaft in place; i.e. a spring clip/ring, pin, key, etc. How is the lever assembly removed from the housing?

Does it look like the attached Yanmar diagram?

If so - sand the shaft smooth where it is visible on the inner side of the cover.

keep adding PB and maybe light oil (sewing machine oil etc) and vibrate it with light hammering on the inner end of the shaft to free it up. Finally drive the shaft out and clean it.

Note there is an o ring at the outer end so you can't add lubricant from that side.

My elderly Yanmar was stuck like that when I bought it. This was my first renovation task and it freed up fine.

Thanks - that worked great - need to replace that O-ring and I'm going to see if I can get the sleve that lines the plate the shaft travels through, but it is working great - although tapping didn't work - I had to use a 10 lb sledge to beat the end of the shaft till it came out.

it does not have a clip or split ring retainer... I used PB and hammer to loosen then sanded and
greased in re-assembly
