Problems with Neighbors dog .. What would you do?

I trust my dogs more than people, and probably more predictable than people

I'm in the same camp as you are:thumbsup:

Dogs are like children, you get out of them what you put into them. Too many people are just plain lazy.

Funny, dogs are animals, and I treat them as such. People are animals as well, and I treat them as such. Thing is, you know where you usually stand with a dog.

True, dogs bite and you can get a good dog to bite. So shoot on site. Got it. Your not uncaring or callous.

That was an erroneous interpretation of anything I have said and an asinine statement.

I guess with all the other postings I read to much into a quick death is kindness, and almost having to shoot your son's dog.

Hopefully none of us will be faced with such decisions but a few times in our lifetimes if at all

Just some observations.

I have seen dogs starving and it is not a pretty sight, we had one wander onto our property that was literally on his last leg and could no longer eat. He was obviously diseased and old; sometimes a quick death is a kindness.

You do no one any good by chasing a stray dog off, you may find it comforting to hope or believe he will be OK and you really don't want to face the tough decision of what to do. In all likelihood, he will just be chased from one place to the other until he can no longer go and die a cruel death in some field or road ditch somewhere. Some can be saved and some can't.

Many of us don't have the luxury of animal control and with the crime rate being what it is and budget cuts, local Sheriff's Departments aren't going to be able to help even if they want to.

Country living is great, but one of the down sides is that just sometimes you just have to suck it up and handle your problems on your own. Not everyone belongs in the country; country living is about more than location.

I guess each person has to decide how best to handle their own situation.

I am not easily angered, but people dropping dogs off for others to deal with really burns me up. As mentioned, we have taken quite a few to a shelter after feeding and grooming them for a few weeks and none were euthanized. Sadly a couple were too sick to be saved.

We placed a couple with neighbors.

Our son who lives on another of our farms is caring for a couple right now trying to find homes for them.

Interestingly, our favorite dog, a little beagle, came from a stray. Someone dropped a pregnant beagle off in town and my mother in law took her in until she could find a home. Shortly after she gave birth, she got out of the pen and was hit by a car. She hand raised the pups until they were old enough to "give away", but we didn't have the heart to and different family members took them.

The "runt of the litter" had a great personality and bundles of energy and he picked my son; long gone now and sure miss him.

Had a hundred lb chessie I used to take to work at a trucking company due to issues win the neighbors. Some drivers would come in and he would go out in the foyer to greet the driver. Harrisburg dispatch would give me a good guy send him to bed. If the dog stayed in the office and growled at the driver dispatch would tell me he' a pos put him back on The road. The dog new instintitvly who was a good person and who might be a problem

To many dogs are purposely dropped off in the country by their owners for whatever reason and figure that the country folk will take care of it. Well guess again I've had to send enough of these to another form of celestial existence. As a former MN farm kid from mid Stearns county area, the lake areas were known to have stray dogs packup like wolves and the locals ended up going on "dog hunts" to get rid of these packs. These former pets are not starving, they are in a pack for a purpose and that is to survive. If a pet owner does not care for his animal/s, pet/s or otherwise than this person/s has no business owning any of the aforementioned. To the OP, your particular problem is that you know who owns the dog. It's made clear they don't care what happens to it. I know what we had to do a long time ago with a dog that kept showing up and we knew who owned it. It was not even neglected, came from a farmer a mile away. We used a corn cob (minus the kernels) soaked in terpentine. (Not going to explain what we did) but the dog never came back after what happened to it.

Same here the wild dogs are really bad cause they have been around humans and are not scared of us,I shoot any dogs that comes back around house second time.As for one in my pastures will be left laying for the birds. Neighbors call me when going to be hunting next door case dogs get over fence. I own 3 dogs, pit(cow dog),cockerspaniel(bird dog),yorkie(wifes dog),very well taking care of but the other dogs are not my responsibility.I shouldnt have to take someones stray to shelter or let them run around my place,I have 2 young boys or wait for something to happen(kill a calf, breed my good dogs, tear up trash, etc. Shot em' and be done with it....

I haven't read the whole post but here's my 2 cents as I have the "neighbors from ****" & their dogs. I've dealt with them from, literally, day 1 when we moved in & they attacked 1 of my dogs (Shar Pei agressive but NEVER out alone & always attacked on my property!!!) & it's been downhill from then. I call Animal Control frequently, so often that he's on speed dial & knows my voice immdiately. But, he's also been very helpful. He's suggested trapping them but I don't want that. For now, I just yell & off they go or I stand outside w/my 15 foot whip & crack it like crazy. They won't come near me like they used to. But, I'm building a barn & will be bringing my horses home come spring. Things will change as the 1st time I see them in my pasture it will be shoot to kill. The old man is a jerk & the wife is an enabler. I'm not afraid of them as I will call the police & have before.

Since this dog seems nice enough, can you load him up & "rehome" him 10 miles down the road (or farther)?
