Why doesn't the administrator on this site make it mandatory to enter tractor /make and model and location at least enter the state or something.
other stuff not as important like hobies and ocupation. But to post you should have to have you're tractor and location filled in. if don't have tractor then at least 'none' is filled in.
So many time i see members asking people to fill in profile, which does help in seeing what they are talking about.
If someone is just browsing all the time and does not want to fill out profile then no big deal untill they want to post.
Really do not know what the big deal is about not wanting to fill out profile or aleast tractor and location? Location imporant for climate type problems/uses.

The site is not run by a dictator -- so everyone is free to fill out their profile if they wish.

If that makes you feel like you're being dicated too??????????????????

Its to get a more clearer answer, why even bother posting if you are going to hide what you are talking about.
Its not like you have to give address , name or anything.

I realize must be a reason and doubt will change, i was just wondering why some people feel this way. So i guess one of the reason is they are invading privacy or dictating what to do.
Why even make users have to register to get username then.

It'd be simple to make entering something in the field mandatory, but forcing it to actually be a valid tractor make and model would not.

How would this be made mandatory?

You code the field to require a text input or registration fails. It's very easy to do.

Yes like Randy said the software should or could have option the you cannot register and or post unless some information was in the field. I guess the adm would only be able to tell us how hard it would be for him to do with the software he uses. Of course you could just put anything in field and it would take it but for most it would help as a lot people just forget or in hurry to get registered possibly.
Mike, yeah you cannot force the correct info, you would just get a higher percentage of information to help the memeber out with. The people that put bad information in, may not get as good information back. Its mostly for people that forget or in hurry to register. you cannot force people to put info in, those will just put none or xxx, thats the're choice.

You replied before I edited my post.

I know it's easy to make a field mandatory, it's not easy to get meaningful information in that field. To make it meaningful, you'd have to create and maintain a list of all tractor manufacturers and every model for each manufacturer, even manufacturers and models that are no longer produced.

The best way to deal with this is the way it's been dealt with since the beginning of TBN. If people do not mention in a post what kind of tractor they have, how much land, where they live, etc. that you need to answer their question, ask for it and also suggext they add this information to their profile.

Location of the poster is important when discussing many subjects. For example: the impact of weather/climate, uses of the tractor, storage of the tractor, crops involved, local/regional economics, etc.

If the topic is storage, there will be a big difference between the methods used in Florida as compared to Montana.

My two cents worth.

Yeah, making it a pull down would be a lot of work. Why I just suggested a simple text input field and no manufacturer list would be required. These are only suggestions because I couldn't care less if members filed in the information or not and by the small amount of replies to this thread I'm going to go out on a limb and say other members feel the same. :)
