If you want to know what you should be paying for propane or heating oil for your area check this link out. You can argue with your propane supplier if you find someone else in the area that will quote you close to what you see in this link for residential. Yes wholesale propane is half what your paying. It's all a game to make money on delivery.

Also I have a wood stove in the basement. Key is to put it close to the outside door. Tell your wife it will keep the floors warm since it's in the basement. No heatpump or central furnance can do that. This is what my wife likes most on the cold nights. She asks me to get it started and welcomes the mess on the 5 feet of concrete from the door to the stove. She is a clean crazy woman on everything else.
