Propane tank seal question (30 lb)

/ Propane tank seal question (30 lb) #21
As for POL thread and that stuff...? I'm clueless. The tank itself is a female receiver and the thread is opposite of usual to tighten or loosen. I don't know what that makes it to be.

If it tightens turning counterclockwise that is the POL type fitting...the teflon tape trick may work to use your propane then get the tank fixed. BTW some male POL fittings also have an O-ring on them, is yours this type? If it just has the bullet shaped nose with no flaws, dings, or deep scratches it should seal up fine with a new valve or a seal replacement in the valve, if that is possible.

Skyco brings up a good point, if the end of your hose fitting has a o-ring on it, that could be the source of your leak. But I am guessing that's not the case, as you would probably have noticed it already. Also, this one tank seems to be the only one leaking.

And he is right about the POL fitting being the left-handed one.

Since where you have the tanks is close to an inside corner where any leaking gas could accumulate, I stand my my suggestion to only try to use up that tank on a windy day.

One thing you might want to consider...since it is the responsibility of the propane supplier to check the tank for expiration date, proper OPD valve, etc. before refilling the tank, seems like they should have noticed if the tank was leaking while they filled it. Have you told the propane supplier who filled the tank about this problem? Did they offer any advice or assistance?

The ends of my hoses do NOT have gaskets on them. given the comments, I suppose this is a POL fitting.

I think I agree with the windy day comment too

I get these filled at my local co-op. Not that this diminishes any responsiblity of them to check anything... but they seem fairly relaxed there. Also, I happened myself, to notice the date on the tank and brought that up with him just before I discovered this leak. In fact, it might have been this tank he was filling. Regardless, I asked about the date and if these tanks "expired" a certain amount of time after the date. I do not remember his answer, but I'll hazard to guess my memory... I THINK he might have said something like "I don't know if it's a certain number of years after the tank date, or if it's rust... we usually look for rust" (or something like that, it wasn't a long chat about the subject)

I've not told them about it as I just discovered it the other day, before posting this. I do not remember how expensive this tank was but I'm debating on simply trying to use it up, then replacing it.

From memory, so I could be wrong, the recertification is required 12 years after the mfg. date on the tank collar, then every 5 years after that. Each time the new date is stamped on the collar close to the original date.

Not sure what is involved in recertification (may require pressure testing??) or what it costs, a local LP dealer (not the "relaxed" guys at the co-op) could advise you on that.

Good luck, jp
