Property Taxes

For the love of god, Americans ALREADY pay a sliding scale on how much you drive by the tax on gasoline. There痴 a federal tax of 18 cents on gas and a 24 cents on on diesel PLUS your state tax. The more gas you buy the more taxes you pay. Don稚 give politicians any more ideas....

They already are getting new ideas. As others have mentioned EV's don't pay for the gas tax, and as vehicles get more fuel efficient less money is paid at the pumps. One thought is to use GPS to track how many miles you travel each year; apparently odometers aren't accurate enough.

I agree.

How do we tax the money the illegals make and send home? Tortilla and bean tax?

Actually from what I have seen many if not most illegals have a Social Security card and another form of Id.
To the best of my knowledge any employer is required to get a ssn and a W-2 form for any employee.
So they are paying some taxes into the system.
If an employee does not have the required documentation the irs would be breathing down their neck rapidly about the labor deduction on the business taxs.

Property Taxes... just my luck that both California and Washington property taxes are quite high...

Did a thread years ago here in Washington where 18 months after I bought my place the assessor raised the value by 80% over what I had paid... really changed all my long range plans... I have the place rented and 8 months rent covers the 13k property tax.

In California... a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath home 28 years old is 18k property tax... so $1500 a month to cover the property tax... to be fair... a lot of the tax is voter approved measures... so many for schools, police, fire, Oakland Raiders, etc... about 24 last I counted...

Now Austria is totally different... no one worries about being taxed from their home... taxes are modest and affordable because the powers that be deemed it important for everyone to have a roof over their head... many homes have been in the same family for generations... sales tax is high but I have discretion on what I buy... Income tax is on par with California but the system is different... employees receiving a pay check never file a return... the money on their check is all theirs... tax already paid...

By far... taxes are my biggest expense of all kinds...

Apartment dwellers fund property taxes through their landlords by way of the rent they pay. It's all figured into the rent by the landlord.

They do not think that far. They do not pay property taxes (direct), so renters regularly vote for increases in property taxes. The tax increases are based on assessed value and they do not have an assessed value mailed to them to put 2 and 2 together.

Bicycles don't pay any taxes but use the roads we drive on.
Electric cars don't pay fuel taxes but also use the roads.

Now who will pay for the road maintenance?
.

I agree. Around here they keep taking lanes away from autos for bicyles, there are bicycle traffic lights (as if a bicyclist would obey a law) that costs money, special striping on the road, special signage, etc. etc. They should be taxed to be on the road and fined for breaking traffic laws.

Ah ha.... part of the solution to homelessness is lower cost housing. Housing would be lower in cost without property taxes being so high. And lower cost to build if building codes were not so strict. Government is to blame.

And then government to blame when you buy a home that is poorly constructed and it falls down on you.

BTW they are talking of doing away with building codes on "homeless" made housing, in this area. You and i still need to follow codes, but if you are homeless, then wouldn't.

I am in a snow belt area.
They plow the bike paths for the few hardy winter riders, make special lanes on bridges and then with the Bixi Bike stands take away precious parking.
Cars can accept poor asphalt bit with narrow bike tires they need near perfect asphalt.

Recently we had a cyclist killed because he raced down a steep hill possibly hitting 60/70 MPH.
A car made a U turn and the cycle smash into it and was killed.
I do believe laws stipulate that one must be in control of his vehicle at all times.
(like 2 little rubber pads will stop a speeding bile going downhill at 60+))
The vehicle driver was only fined for the U turn proving my point.
Now the city wants to close down that hilly road to all motorists.

One bike snow contract was awarded to the tune of close to$1 mil! (and not a commuter path but a scenic one mainly for tourists, like a tourist will bring his bike in the winter)

Don't even ask about obeying stops, they simply don't exist in the eyes of cyclists nor do illegal turns.

Yes, my pet peeve!

Hey, we have a 'dooring law' You will be heavily fined if a cycle hits your opened door! Like you can see him coming as he weaves in and out of traffic and up and off of sidewalks.
Them a great majority don't have any lights when riding at night nor are helmets required. (too much trouble due to the Bixi Bike rentals I presume)

Oakland has a lot of renters... and for years it was almost a shoe-in to get new property assessments passed... even for midnight basketball...
