Also the fact that the 2000D has 921 hours on it its mostlikely not a recon. When they recon them they turn the meters back to like 15-28 hours on the meter, why not zero i have no idea, jsut what i have seen at the dealer i got mine at plus lokking at others. So if it was (the 2000d) a recon someone has put a lot of hours on it since then. Also one of the ones redone in the US usually dont get the engine gone over as they try to buy mechanically sound tractors. They usually paint get a new seat correct any 3pt problems etc. They do not mess with the hour meters and will usually have 600+ hours on them, but these things turn back to zero after 999.9hours on them so a US recon could actually say 15 hours and be legit. Also most with the US machines dont refer to them as only having 30 hours after recon as like i said most engines are not gone through on the US done ones, that said Fredricks prolly dose a fair amout of internal engine stuff on some tractors, but as a percentage of them that leave its prolly fairly small %age.

The $5800 doesn't include the mower. Just the tractor and FEL. (I have seen some used bush hogs on craigslist for ~ $250 - 350.)

I am in NC (I think some of the other posters here are SC?)

The 2000D owner has had it several years. Says no leaks, doesn't smoke (except for "diesel smoke" .. need to check what color it is). He used it to scrape his road regularly, but would like something bigger these days.

So, I thought most of the Yanmars (except the three digit models) were brought in from Japan as gray market machines. I was told that meant they had been rebuilt (mmm... now that I think about it, they didn't say where...)

The troublesome ones were rebuilt / refurbed (is there a difference?) in VN or Korea. Yes? No?

So I pretty much thought all the machines were refurbed except for the direct imports to the US (which would be pricier anyway).

Sorry for the confusion. A YM2000 is an overseas model yanmar so is a ym1500 and ym1700 etc. They are imported here as grey models. A recondidioned tractor has been associated with the VN market. But there is a large importer of Japanese market yanmars in Alabama called fredricks. They redo them and are the only large US recondioner. Other smaller guys buy a container and Rebuild/recondion on a small scale but not the large scale.

As far as the Korea thing i think its something the VN sellers say as the VN imports are pretty well trashed here on the internet. I have a recon i assume from VN butt the guy told me it was from Korea. As far as we all know here they are all from VN. Maybe they bounce to Korea before export here i dont know? I think all the overseas reconditioners come from VN. As far as im aware there are 2 big companies in VN. One is VN Tractors (the businesses name) and i think the other is LCI (that may just be the importers name though).

"Reconditioned" (VN) is different than "gray market?"

My confusion is I thought they were the same , just done in different places.

The 2000D I am thinking about is the one with 900+ hours, so it seems like anything going wrong has gone wrong. It spent some time or came from a dealer-- Corrriher in Newton, NC.

What surprises me is how many little guys there must be reworking them, as I have talked with two more sellers (the 1700 - 2wd :-(, and another 2000 - 2wd ;-( ) Both said their tractors were redone at dealers. One in GA, one in NC. So are those the VN ones? Or someone who gets a container full of them....

My one concern would be whether the 900+ hours on the YM2000D is getting up there.

Anyone know what the hours are when they get dumped from Japan?

I would say 900 hours is roughly the same as 50k miles on a car. Thoroughly broken in, far from worn out.

On a 30 year old tractor the three-digit meter could have rolled past 900 several times. That meter is more of a maintenance reminder, not a historical record. You need to appraise wear by examination.

Grey market is one made to sell in Japan, not in America, they are used there and then sold used to American dealers. Grey market also includes the one sent to Vietnam (vn) for reconditioning. There are some reconditioned in the US. 900 hours on a 1970 something Yanmar is low. Not sure how much trust to put in some of the hour meters. Don't know about the 2000 meter whether it rolls over at 999 or goes higher. My ym2002 has about 2800 hours on it. It had 2500+ when it came from Vietnam. Good luck with your decision.

I would beg to differ with you on that......a naturally aspirated diesel engine can easily go over 10,000 hours with good maintenance. So 900 (heck, even 1800) is just a fraction of the hours you can expect to get out of it.

Grey market just means the tractors were made for sale in Japan, and were imported here without support from Yanmar. A grey market can be a recon, or not. A U.S. model could be reconditioned (I don't know of any...but they COULD be!)

I would dissagre with that first statement. Correct a large AG tractor or heavy equiptment with big Catipillar or JohnDeere engines in them yes will go 10,000 or 15,000 hours before they are just to worn out to go. I doubt these would make it half that long. Most around here say there pretty well worn at around 3,000-4,000 hours. No body here will ever see their trator hit 10K so we probably wont know.

I work with loggers daily and they rack up almost 2500-3000 hours a year on some of the equiptment so 10,000 is less than 5 years of daily use. I have seen plenty of equitment with 8K + hours on it, but its all heavy equiptment not tiny yanmar deisels.
