Pros/cons of tier 4?

The 1025 starts easier in the cold, simply because they have a glow plug light and higher idle speed that I had to both manually set on the 4010. It runs rougher and is not any quieter. Don't think the tier 4 of the big tractors has filtered down much to the smaller ones like the 1025..........

So what is the big difference in series 1 from 2011, 2012 ,2013 year build tractors? I was under the impression they all have a glow plug light and higher idle speed. From what I can find the 1023E is the same displacement, but the 1026R got more displacement going to the 1025R but less horsepower.

I have the 1026R. The last model year for it was 2012 (per EPA exhaust emisisons change for engines built starting 2013).

That is correct, they reduced power to make the engine less efficient = lower exhaust temp = lower NOx formation in the exhaust = "new" model 1025 reflecting the lower power output.

So.....you get lower power for the same fuel consumption just to have lower NOx from a low hour use engine. Great deal, eh?

Now I really really wish I coulda gotten a 1026r before they came out with the smog controlled 1025!!!

Sales person said they leaned out the fuel to the engine for tier 4. However, the 1025 is FINALLY down to about the hp proration (24.2/18.5) of the 0.46 gph that the 4010 used over 660 hours. After about 25 hours.

Yup - it pays to stop by the dealer for parts every so often to keep tabs on what is happening real-time. That's the only way I stumbled on this.........I was planning to upgrade in 2 years, but EPA "jumped the shark"!

So, us guys that were lucky enough to buy the early 1023E & 1025R without the stupid pull up the knob feature to back up have non tier 4, non smog engines. Correct?

Correct, except you mean 1026R. They did not change the tractor model name of the 1023E because they quote lower engine hp for it.

I got the middle ground - the 2012 Model 1026R added the "stupid pull up knob to back up", but does not have the tier 4 engine. I guess that's more than half the battle won for me.

Regulatory burden in the U.S. is totally out of control now.

yes you are correct I did mean 1026R, I'm a bad proof reader.........

as far as regulations ..... vote them out!

I don't think that's quite what went on. They just backed the fuel off a tiny bit to get under 25HP to get under the rules.

Just for interest on some of the higher horse power engines(not deere) they tuned the engine for max efficiency and then add DEF. There is no emissions crap on the engine they just treat the exhaust. Far better way of meeting the regulations than the route JD has taken.
