This may seem way to simple but wouldn't installing a bypass filter system in the hydraulic system eliminate all the filter problems on a PT?

I believe that it could work, but you would have to reduce the pressure down to an acceptable psi. A bypass filter for each circuit would be ideal. The filter unit and adapter would run between $75. and $150.00 for each unit. I think the external filter cart set up to filter each day or once a week is the way to go. You could even filter new oil, why you say, because new oil is not filtered as well as you think.

They also have high pressure filter for 3000 psi circuits, but again they are not cheap. Since our PTO pump is running all the time, this would be the ideal circuit to put a high pressure filter with indicator, in line, before it gets to tank.

I think if someone came up with a kit to filter the PT's sufficiently, every owner would purchase one.

I have most of the makings of an external 120V filter setup but I still need to find a source for cheap bulkhead fittings. Once I get it up and running I will let you know how it works.

You mean something like this from KleenOil. :) They have hydraulic preasure control valves that bolt directly to the bottom of their filter housing's. Makes installing them a snap. They include everything, the filter housing, bolts, bracket, hydraulic hoses and fitting's.

Kleenoilusa.com - Kleenoil Filtration System Filter units.

I finally found the 3 micron filter limit, and the half gal per min flow rate, but never did find the cost. It sounds like a good deal, if it has an acceptable cost level.

What size filter housing are you looking at? I can get you the prices.

Physical size, would have to be small enough to fit inside the engine cover of the PT's. In gpm, the amount of hyd fluid on some of the tanks is 10 gal, and larger ones are 20 gal. I noticed that the filters filter about .55 gpm.

Dear DieselPower,

You've mentioned these units a couple of times. Pricing would be useful to know, so that people could make informed decisions. The units look great, but they also look as if they are targeted at fleet owners, who can amortize the cost over constant use.

I agree with JJ; if someone works out how to filter oil in the primary working circuits of the PT, it would be a great addtion to the tractor. We all know that the machines will last longer and perform better in their 'old' age if we have clean oil circulating.

J.J.: How is your filter cart coming? Have you thought about a pair of quick connect fittings to enable you to hook up your external filter to clean the oil in the hydraulic tank?
Have you looked at the Parker unit? They also make a 6000 psi full flow filter that might be useful for the PTO or drive filtration loops. Thoughts?

All the best,

Peter

I think the filter units mentioned by DieselPower retail for around $650 while the Parker unit in the link in the quote retails for around $900.

Larger filter carts that include an electric pump and two filters are $1500-1800 as best as I can tell.

I have not had the time to call Terry but I do intend to get all 4 wheels off the ground and see if the linkage is working properly.
