PT 1430 Hydraulic Trouble

I did get time today to set the PT on blocks.

The lever on the tram or trans. works fine on the forward push on the treadle. However, when I move in reverse, the lever hardly moves backward. I am beginning to think my problem may be in the linkage somewhere as some of you have suggested.

I did not disconnect the hydroback cable from the lever and manually move the lever. I will need to do this to further determine if the problem is indeed in the cable or linkage.

It would be nice if that is the problem and nothing more serious. :)

I am sure you guys know this, although I did not see this posted. When I was shopping for a 1430 I called PT for some advice. Terry was out so another mechanic was answering some questions. He said that the treadle linkage on the older PT's was prone to issues. He went so far as to say I would be happier with the newer PT than the older PT. I did not ask details as I was just inquiring about service issues in general.

One other item I forgot to mention from the hydraulic shop was the owner told me if the wheels on the machine are lifted off the ground, a good indication of the condition of the wheel motors is whether a wheel is easy to rotate. I did this with my machine and they are very easy to turn. If the motors were alright, the wheels should be more difficult turn. Does this make sense?

Was the machine running when you turned the wheels by hand?

NO it was not running.

I did talk to Terry at PT today and he told me to look for another hydraulic shop...it sounds as if this guy does not know what is going on, he said.

I also asked about the motor oil used in the hydraulic system as there is quite a thread on the subject here and he stated the oil is used for it contains many additives regular hydraulic fluid lacks. This is why PT uses motor oil instead of the hyd oil.

I would think the combustion additives would be of little use. Terry told me one of the main reasons they used motor oil was because it was easy for people to get and cost less for the customer to change.

I had the same problem, and removed the Hydro-back, which is a spring inside another spring and cleaned every thing and put it back together. There are pictures on the forum somewhere. I called Terry about adjusting the Hydro-back, and he talked me through the setup. It still doesn't seem right. It could be the cable also. That cable runs about $ 135.00. The new hydraulic shifter on the newer units is the way to go. There are three adjustments, one is up front in the forward linkage, and the other two are at both ends of the Hydro-back.

Yes, Terry told me about the newer hydraulic shifter. I asked if it could be adapted to my machine but he informed it would not be cost effective to do so.

In the owners manual there is piece on adjusting the hydroback. Perhaps when I get some free time I will check it out.

After replacing a broken hose on the 1430 yesterday, the linkage bolt broke attaching my treadle to the cable. I ordered new linkage...who knows, this may have been part of the problem....would be nice if it was.

My next route will be to replace the cable again to see if it helps the problems.

He would be correct, engine oil does contain additives not found in hydraulic/utf type oils. Problem is the additional ones it does contain have no purpose except in a internal combustion engine. The anti-wear additives can be as high as 4-5 times higher in a UTF fluid then what would be found in a engine oil along with higher levels of anti-foam and friction modifiers. Engine oil has one place, a engine.
