I removed the alternator and it's brackets becuase i can run the aftermarket 12 VDC radiator electric easily and i have it on top of the radiator and the hyd radiator directly above it. So the top original PT hyd cooling fan will just be an ornament for now. The amount of air the aftermaret 12 VDC fan moves is incredible. So the old hyd fan it just along for the ride.

This sounds awesome. I am extremely jealous.

I don't understand your comment on the alternator. How do you power the electrical stuff without an alternator? Does it still have the coil in the engine like the smaller engines?

I wish I could do this to my PT, but it has some of the pumps behind and some in front of the engine. Even if you made a kit, I don't think a lot of it would be relevant to my machine, or am I wrong?

Hi Steve,

Nice link on the PVC chemical resistance! I was not so worried about failure of the tank but whether you would leach out something that might deposit and gum up your carborator. I am not sure that chart alleviates my concerns but then I am a worrier (at least it makes me god at my job!).

With the gas tank out back that should open up alot more room under the canopy. Do you think you could fit the radiator in the space where the gas tank used to be?

Tim- No i don't think it would be practical. With no gas tank present in the old PT position -I now have easy access to all the hyd components.

The riser cage that i made is not very complicated and could literally be done with a hand drill and 4.5" hand grinder with cutting blade. The standoffs are simply pipe cut to length and all the hardware is available at your local hardware store.

I still have a leak in the plumbing from where i had to plumb around the alternator and bracket. I will remove this and simplify the hose run.

In order to fit the kawi engine without modification you could cut off the last 6-8 inches of the PT frame and extend it by splicing in additional steel and then bolt together you could mount the engine in the same place and use the kawi radiator and fan setup that comes stock. That was my original plan but i decided to go with the top cage instead. The more i thought about it all the cutting of the main frame and top cage i thought it would be better to add the top cage.

Thanks,

Steve

BobRip- on the 29HP kawi tThe back of the flywheel has a bolt hole pattern that you could bolt to to drive your other pump. If you have room or if you can make room it should work very well. You would have to use the top cage method for the hyd and rad and fans - but that is not difficult to make.

If you have the time and feel comfortable I would certainly go for it.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, I think keep it short has many advantages. It keeps the turning radius short and you can still put it in a pickup truck.

Bobrip - the fan is powered by 12 vdc pos and ground you just need to find a wire that gets 12 volts when the key is in the on position and if the wire also drops to 0 volts when the key is in the start position even better.

My setup is simple when the key is in the on position the fuel pump and fan runs. It starts no problem like this even with the lights on at temp of 20 degrees F and very small battery.

Thanks,

Steve

Do you still have the alternator? If sounds like you removed it.

Bobrip- i removed it completely it was a complete separate system a 7127 delco 100 amp car alternator. It way not wired into the kawi engine in any way it was simply extra amperage that i thought i would need to run both fans. Now that i have the big radiator fan cooling both the rad and hyd rad i am not exceeding the kawi amperage specs. The good thing is that i can always reinstall it but i really don't think that it is required now.

Thanks,

Steve

The alternator sounds like something I would try to add, but is not really needed. My PT seems to run all the lights that I have added and the fan. Keep up the good work. It really sounds like Power Trac is not putting in a large enough engine. I wonder if they would consider doing it. JDBeach got larger wheel motors and I know they have experimented with larger engines. One of their salesmen told me he had taken home a PT425 with a 30 horsepower engine. He seemed very pleased with it.

scarg, thanks for taking the time to answer/consider all of our questions. Again, awesome job in such a short time (I guess you didn't want to be tractorless too long). I envy both your tools and skills.

I think PT doesn't put a larger engine on the PT425 because they want to seel you the PT1430. However, the extra $6k for the PT1430 definitely puts it in a deferant class. I could see then adding the PT430 for another $2k premium as an intermediate step (and it would probably be $1.2k of profit).
