PT Will not start at an angle

OK... I have had this happen 3 times now and am really not sure why this is happening.

If I stop my PT nose down on a 15 or greater degree slope after running it for a while it will not start. In any other position this is a non issue...

In the past I have had to wait a while and it restarted. This time with some perserverence I got it to go after cranking and cranking...

I am going to call Terry tomorrow about this one but wondered if anyone had any ideas.....

Your oil level will be low and running away from the low oil level sensor , it is preventing it from starting .

I have had the same problem when loading on my tilt deck trailer particularly when the machine is hot after a hard work. The last time it did this it would not even crank and was part way up the trailer, backing up. The starter solenoid had broken of its mount and quit functioning, probably from shorting out. I jumped the starter but it would not start until it was rolled back down to the ground. Just what I wanted to do at 9pm after mowing on a hot day, work on the tractor just to get it on the trailer. Anyway I figured it was the oil level causing the problem.

I checked my oil and it is full. Also, this PT is rated at 45 degrees and the engine is supposed to handle slopes like this.

I guess a call to Terry will give me some peace of mind...

Carl,

You might want to check the engine interconnect harness, and the wire connecting to the deutz fuel solenoid. My PT had trouble starting (after cleaning) and ultimately, I traced it to some extra dust in the engine interconnect (and on the deutz starter solenoid). I put on a little contact cleaner, and it starts just fine.

You might also want to check the cable interconnect behind the instrument panel and verify that the wires are tight and that the connections at the PTO switch are good.

There are two additional safety switches in the start circuit--at least on the machines with a cable for the tram control. One is the operator presence switch in the seat. The second is the tram in neutral switch that is located at the tram pedals on machines that have a cable. If either switch is open the machine will not start.

It sounds like the motor is cranking, so I think the two safety switches would not be the problem.

Yeah, engine cranks...

Terry thinks it is a short in the electric that runs the fuel injectors. He told me where the connector is, and I am going to take it apart and clean it.

Why it is slope only is still a mystery and I am not sold this is the solution... Then again, maybe the connection is triggered off on severe slopes.

I am now working much further away from the house than before so the walks back home are a bit of a pain.. Hope we have a solution here...

OK, if it is cranking it has to be a fuel supply problem. The electric fuel cut off valve has to work--that is it must open when power is applied and that is what Terry is suggesting as a likely problem. If that checks out and there is still a problem then start at the tank--is the level sufficiently high that fuel is available on a slope? Is the screen fouled? Is the filter clogged? Is the fuel line clogged? If all of that is good then you are to the injector pump--and since it starts sometimes I think that is unlikely to be the problem.

Sorry, not productive, but still a fun thought. Kind of like a dinghy on a yacht.
