AT what temperature does the PT1850 engine typically run? The gauge seems to be marked in 30 degree increments on the bottom half (100-tick mark-160), but 40 degree increments on the top half (160-tick mark-240).

So far my machine is running a little above the tick mark between 160 and 240, which is either "190+a bit" (okay ?) or "200+ a bit" (a little hot?)

For me that is about right. I believe the operating range is 160 to 200F.

Here is a nice schematic with details. I did have my thermostat fail, which caused some cylinder scarring.

I have the same concern.

It was hot out the other day so I paid specific attention to the engine temp and it was running just above "the tick" for a while, which I took for 210ish and then went up to about half way between "the tick" and 240, maybe 225+, so I shut it down. Seemed too hot to me, but this is my first Deutz. I haven't modified the cooling shroud yet, but I'm definitely going to go through the lube oil cooling system before I run it too much more.

Do you have a laser heat gun? I hate pts method to indicating temp. How dusty is your mowing? How often do you blow the cooling fins out. I am on nights but I will post my cleaning tools and techniques plus the mod I did on my side door which makes cleaning way easier.

I just use an engine cleaning wand to reach in and clean the fins. Using a degreaser works better than just air so I will use water/degreaser every couple of cleanings.

So to clean out the engine radiator I use a shorter version of something like this...

Draper ABG5 Air Blow Gun Right Angle 56mm

Now if you have taken the deflector completely off this is not necessary. Like ken, I will run water through coils every couple of weeks. I would advise, though to not run the tractor after until it has dried otherwise if you have dust you will have mud (ask me how I know).

Also, this is the mod I did to my cover. It was when I was first learning to weld, not that that is any excuse. I used some cheap hinges, and welded a washer onto a nut so I could undo the one side by hand.

Ken- is that aquarium bubble wand really what you use?
I use an engine siphon wand. Wet and/or dry.
Carl- do you still find your tinytach useful?
All the best, Peter

Tinytac usefell? Nice to have a rpm indicator and a good digital clock. I have a plan that once my shop is up I will do a complete rewrite of my machine including a new dash with new gauges.
