This is a pict. of the "finished" product. My nephew was appalled at the racket the pt made when running so he decided to do something about it. Parts are some pieces of motorcycle exhaust pipe, some stainless pipe from milking machine and a used up fire extinguisher that he cut apart to add baffles and muffler packing.

Closeup w/hood down and looking at the heat shield. The original deflector on the tube was welded to the extinguisher canister for support. The heat shield is a must cause all the heat is now being pumped right out of the tube and is heating the fire extinguisher up pretty hot, don't want to cook the tire.
The nice muffler work was all my nephews, the crappy sheet metal work was all mine.

Well done but the question remains, how is the noise level?

Closeup of manifold before/wrap.

Nice looking header. Your nephew weld that one up from scratch?

So the real question will be does your PT still backfire when turning the engine off after running it for a long time?

Yes he did a fine job of putting it together. We pulled the original header off and he took it home to use as a template. The funny thing is the original header was slightly pinched together so that it was a little difficult to remove and he said he would adjust it apart a little so that it would slip on to the bolts easier, but he forgot, so the new one fits tight too.

The noise level is an order of magnitude less. Now the noise is mostly the engine/mechanical noise an engine gives off. When i first started moving, i could hear the gravel from the tires driving over it and i thought i'd left my bucket a little low and was dragging on the ground and causing the noise, but no.

The header, i believe is two pieces of pipe, you can see where he attached the two in the over head picture. When i shut the engine down, it just stops, no backfire.

Nice work.

However, when brush hogging, anything external on mine would be short lived. I've managed to knock off my fire extinguisher and it sits right behind me. I've knocked all the headlights out of kilter many times, and frequently get stabbed, poked and gouged by branches. Twice today I managed to have a branch lift the FEL for me while pushing into brush.

But, you gotta do what you gotta do to maintain your hearing.

That's a good point but i don't think there is alot added beyond the old "muffler" though i did run into a tree with a pretty solid wack on the old one. I'll definitely be upset if i knock this off.

I remember the first time my FEL started going up all by it's self, thinking what the heck? before noticing the branch jamming the lever.
