MF GC2400 that replaced retired CC 2518 and retired CC 2160
I have a 2518 and was wondering if the bearings in the PTO clutch can be changed or do I need to replace the whole clutch? The mower deck runs with the PTO switch in the off position. If you turn the switch on and off it engages the PTO on and off so I'm thinking that the bearing in the pulley is sticking. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Just about none of the newer PTO clutches on the CC's are rebuildable and are replaced as a single unit. The price, however, you will not at all like ($300-400). Before replacing I would remove it from the tractor and try everything in my power to clean it up with large doses of compressed air, maybe even get stupid and use WD40 and compressed air, and of course make sure all the electrical connectons and switch are OK. Short of that if it's worn or damaged inside, (removing it will probably give you a better idea) you might be looking at having to replace it. I think the prices on those PTO clutches are a complete RIP-OFF /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif, and on some of these newer machines they are not lasting any more than a few seasons. I am still using the original 26 year old Werner PTO clutch on my 682 that was adapted to the Honda engine, which is semi-serviceable and adjustable, and still works perfect despite the plastic coil covering having cracks in it. With some of this new stuff any breakdown often means having to eat ketchup soup and popcorn for supper for a few weeks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How does the clutch pulley feel if you spin it by hand with the belt removed? If she spins nice, the bearings are fine. If the clutch is getting engergized when it shouldn't, I'd look into the relay that feeds it.

I took PTO off today, bearing was siezed up. Ordered new bearing, should be here on Friday. $13 for bearing is cheaper than $260 for new PTO clutch!! Thanks for the repiles.

If you replace just the bearing, make sure that you peen the edge over to keep it in place. They could "spin-out" and cause trouble.....

Talked with dealer again today, and found out the PTO clutch was still under warranty. (runs out in 2 months). So I'm picking up a new clutch on Saturday. Thanks to all that replied to this message.

I also own a 2518 (150 hours) and was wondering if your Mow-in-reverse is disabled or is still in place and how many hours are on your tractor? After the first 2 or 3 mowings, I had great concern about how often the PTO was being shut down and restarted . . . seems like it would have to wear out sooner . . . my solution was to disconnect that feature. Great tractor, very happy so far! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My tractor has 98 hours on it. I "modified" the switch for reverse mowing so it doesn't work. (Bent the arm that comes in contact with the switch when you start to go into reverse.) Otherwise I like the tractor.

First thing I did the day it was delivered two years ago was disable the reverse pto kill switch. All the backing up I have to do, I'd fry that thing in no time. Whether or not your blades are spinning, its still dangerous to back up a tractor without looking. They'll never design a kill switch for those that don't look.
