PTO bogs down while mowing

Spyderlk- yea, looking at the owners manual this morning - says single stage clutch, so Hyd clutch not a factor. Gonna try adjusting free play tonight when I get home. Appreciate the assist!

Think you guys are on the MARK! I'm doing errands right now, but when I get back I'll do all the above... Really believe the single stage clutch has too much free play... I'll let cha know what I find!

It should have free play. -- Too much - gear grinding as you shift pto lever -- Too little- slips under load. ... But on my Kub HST that clutch slipping would affect my motive power as well as pto.

Hey Gents,

Got home a little later than planned, but checked the owners manual for the Free Play. The range should be 3/4 to 1-3/16 inches. Measured mine several times by pressing on the clutch to see when it would disengage the PTO. The clutch pedal traveled 4 inches before the PTO stopped... Pure owner negligence I'm afraid. So I will shrten the rod and see how she mows next week. I'll keep you updated. Appreciate everyone's input and time. Hopefully I still have some clutch left after the adjustment!!

Freeplay is the movement of the clutch before you feel a change in resistance. On my Branson I have to use my hand to press on the clutch since with my foot I couldn't feel the change in resistance. This freeplay is to insure that the clutch is fully engaged and you are constantly spinning the throw out bearing.

Own the same model tractor. Looked in repair manual and saw nothing that would connect it with a hyd. pto. looks gear driven to me with a single stage clutch to engage and dis-engage. Looked for troubleshooting info but found nothing that would apply to your issue. Never had my bushhog slow down without rpm's dropping accordingly. Unless your clutch is slipping I dunno.

Appreciate the effort... Ordered repair manual too...the clutch free play adjustment is within specs, so if there is no way to adjust the clutch itself, thinking it may be spent. Might wait until the winter to tear into it if that's the case.

Negative. Everything works fine, just the PTO & finish mower slows down.

If pto is gear driven(not hyd ind pto) as someone stated with one clutch for trans & pto then if pto slows down travel speed must also slow down as both are powered by same clutch.

Yes. ... My B9200 has, in addition to the manual engagement clutch, an additional automatic clutch allowing drive to the pto but spinning freely if power tries to feed back from the implement. ... IOW, it acts one way. On mine this clutch makes a clicking sound as an implement coasts down. I can imagine such clutch would clatter if it slipped under load. -- Maybe you have something like this but yours is silent - a sprag clutch - and it has started to slip in the drive direction. :confused3:

We are not talking about a hyd driven pto. we are talking about a hyd clutch for a mechanical gear driven pto.

With no change in speed, it's not the main clutch slipping.

and just to be clear. freeplay is pedal movement before resistance. your 4+" movement to full clutch is likely fine if there is between .75 and 1ish" before pressure.

Me too... When the Repair manual gets here, I will study it and hopefully figure out something like you captured above. I have half mind to call NH and see if I can get a mechanic to give me some guidance... Either way I'll make sure I share the final fix.,

Do you have any other pto driven attachment? If so hook it up and try loading it to see if it slows down as the cutter does. If it does you know the issue is with the tractor, it not with the cutter. It would have to be an attachment you could load heavy. kt

Have you tried hooking to something heavy with the draw bar and see if you spin the tires or lug the engine? If yes this would point towards your clutch not being the problem.

Not yet... motownbrowne mentioned testing the clutch against a solid object to see if the clutch is slipping. Such a strange problem since everything else works great. Just wondering if the popping of the rear PTO handle out of gear is the dead give-away for the clutch.i will try to test the clutch this weekend somehow.
