PTO bogs down while mowing

Nah, just ran out of time over the weekend. With all the great feedback, I want to go back and double check everything from scratch. Might have missed something obvious. Never hurts. Someone with the service manual on this model said there was nothing that addresses my scenario...sooo, makes me wonder if something basic got overlooked.

...?... EXternal one way clutch on tractor stub end of PTO drive shaft. They can be pretty small and maybe not interpreted for what they are. -- They are often employed with high inertial loads that run at high speed. ... And usually would be situated on the implement end rather than the tractor end. :confused3:

If your engine didn't bog when your mower already did, you already have your answer. For a Ss clutch, it is aft of the clutch.
On the pto popping out, have you checked for pro shaft thrust play? That will for sure walk them out of engagement.

If the actual tractor pto is slowing down, but the engine speed and ground speed is not changing, it is between the ss clutch and the pto stub shaft.
the OP is now wishy washy on details of what he actually saw.. so we will just have to wait and see.

I'm also wondering how possible it is that the PTO and groove speed changed together, but that the OP didn't notice the change in ground speed.
Just another stab in the dark, though.

pto speed you might have to see ( unmowed portions ), or hear ( bogging sound ).. but a speed reduction should be easy to feel by an inertial change.
if you are driving on your tractor and reach up and dump the throttle or clutch.. you sway forward... you can feel that immediately..
"Wishy Washy"? Wow... Thx. Anyway, didn't expect all the responses and appreciate the feedback. Kind of new at the repair tractor side of the house... So just want to make sure I'm not wasting any more of folks time... Without going into detail over the Internet, I can't look at the tractor right away. So, first chance I'll print all these ideas and work through them. Hopefully it's a belt or something simple... Think I'm gonna pull the protective pulley covers off the deck first and see what happens in the thick grass.. (Of course, safety is paramount). If belt slips, I should see that pretty easy ( I hope...) when it bogs. If the deck is not the culprit, I'll move on to the harder stuff. Again, appreciate the feedback and will let you know what I find.

I believe that having the ability to physically see the drive belt is very important in determining what is slowing down. Also look at the belt to see if it looks real shiny or shows any evidence of burned in "hot spots" where the drive pully was spinning but the belt was not. Surprising how a belt can slip and not squeal or smoke at times and others times they smoke and squeal like crazy.

8 year old belt is probably dry and hard and doesn't provide the friction a new belt would.

Agreed. I'm outta here.
Finally got a chance to look at the belt... Definitely need to relace it. Got some cuts and is quite dry and hard. I tightened the spring tensioner about a half an inch and that did the trick. Ran it for 5 hours today and she ran great. PTO handle stayed engaged.... Thanks for the help!

Seriously, the guy talks about changing an old belt and you guys suggest he's being foolish? If you don't want to keep posting, you don't have to, but there's no need to insult the guy.
