Thanks for the ideas. Does anyone know a time between overhaul on these things? Are the knives, grinders, etc. replacable? Do the Chinese models have adequate safety features?

From my experience, overhaul is not in the vocabulary. The blades can all be replaced/sharpened. Some people keep two sets of blades so one can be in use and the other sharpened and ready to use. I've found the blades stay sharp remarkably long, but you need to be mindful of not feeding in material covered in dirt, nails, etc.

I made the mistake of trying to sharpen the blades on my grinder - bad idea. Unless you have professional sharpening equipment that will preserve the angle etc, send them out. It''s worth the $20 or that it costs.

Bebster, I have an option to buy the PTO version of the chipper you have. How have you liked it? I have several acres of brushy groth to clear and the bursh piles I have already are huge.

You don't need a chipper you need a match and 5 gallons of diesel. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wallenstein (in Canadian ) makes a nice 6" chipper with adjustable shoot,They retail in the
2600 range in Newengland,So far I have heard very positive responses from the
customers

We are a dealer for these machines and have had no negative feedback, If anyone has interest in a "Wallenstein" unit give me a call at 270-528-3323 and I will fax a spec sheet---Note: These units are not designed for tractors under 22 HP and weigh about 875 pounds--Ken Sweet

do you sell one that is compatible with a Kubota BX 22 HP???????

We are a Wallenstein dealer but do not sell the chippers because there is no way to stop the chipper if something or someones body part gets caught in the chute.

I just took delivery on a Woods 5000 Chipper (Same as Greg's Bearcat 70554) and am just amazed how well it works on the back of my Kubota BX22 (22 hp engine, 16.7 HP at the PTO). Eats up to 5" branches and is a good size/weight match for my sub-compact tractor.

MUCH-MUCH easier than loading the brush in a pickup truck and taking it to the dump. Surprisingly small debris piles, which is good. You have to load a lot of branches in there to get the big piles you see in some photos.

Dealer wanted $ 3,079 for it, we negotiated to $ 2,500. I was tempted to spend the money for the Salsco 824 (double the price) as it had a hydraulic feed but in the end I'm glad I saved the cash as the gravity-feed Woods 5000 takes it all in once you get it started anyways.

Recommended, but not for the squeamish. Chippers are dangerous machines and rate right up there with chain saws for requiring you to be paying attention all the time, every time.
