Overrunning? Adaptor? Can't quite come up with the significance, but there must be some (I counted the smilies)................chim

Gary,
Drivetrane life saver. Good/cheap insurance. What are the shiny U bolts on axle tube - new fender supports maybe?
As I recall you don't have a ROPs on Alma Rose, Correct?
Regards, Mark

That is an overrunning clutch to keep the inertia in a rotary cutter to continue to drive the tractor. I had to use on on my old Ford NAA Jubilee.

hey guys,
mark , no rops, all the bolts i could "see" on the unit are new, these are fender bolts,
henro, didn't understand your reply, the coupler acts like a shock absorber, NOT A SLIP CLUTCH,(keep the drive line from jerking when you hit something thats been camo'd /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) something like that....its like a lot of things we see, not very clear with name and what it actually does.....(some people call it a PTO override clutch)
hope this answers some of the questions, my dealer just automatically included it with the purchase, i'm glad he did....

guys,
I have one also and used it on the rotary mower, but will I need it on the 5' finish mower? I can just leave it on there but I have it off now as the tiller will not work with it. thanks,bw

That is not correct. It is for tractors that do not have some version of live pto. Without live pto, _when in gear_ the pto & rear wheels are locked together. So with a heavy flywheel load like a brush hog, even if you push in the clutch you will not stop - the attachment will continue to push the rear wheels through the tranny.

Basically the coupler you picture works like a large socket set ratchet - it allows the pto to freewheel in one direction, but allpy poer in the other.

It will not absorb any shocks or help your driveline in any way.

I agree with Paul (rambler) in that it is only an 'overrunning' clutch (coupler), i.e. the PTO can coast down (spin faster) than the tractor PTO drive stub. Great for tractors without live PTO.
Tractors with PTO braking can not stop the rotary cutter from rotating if there is an overrunning coupler. The rotary cutter will keep turning.
This coupler presents a lot of confusion, and a fair amount of it is caused by salesmen who don't understand it.
But if the rotating blades hit something, the overrunning coupler will not slip and full PTO power will continue to be exerted. There are slip clutch's designed to handle overload on the PTO when hitting something "camo'd" in the grass or brush.

What concerns me about the pictures above is I see no PTO shielding. Even the tractor's shielding looks to have been removed. Please people do not play with danger like this. Plastic shielding cost less than $50 installed and will save human life and limb.

I was only going to comment in my ignorance and say that I've never seen a tractor without a PTO cover or shield. Was it removed or not standard equipment on this tractor?

/ Pto coupler!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #13
The tractor PTO shield is missing because it's a Yanmar, they don't come with one if it's a grey market which this one is.

Ditto. This may well be the most understodd type of device.. compaired between the slip clutch ( torque limiter ) and the ORC ( over riding coupler ).

I had a large discussion on this same topic a couple months ago. the fellow refused to believe the orc was meant to transmit the full power of the pto in the driven direction, by design.. and insisted that it was designed to slip under load.

I finally emailed SPEECO's tech dept.. put the question tot hem in plain english, and posted the replied email. The other poster I had been conversing with halfheartedly agreed with it.. then pretty much blew off the whole discussion as bunk, and I've not heard from him since. Figures... that usually happens when you bring facts into an argument...

Works like the Spraug clutch on a bicycle. When you stop peddling the pedals don't continue to rotate, no matter how fast the rear wheel goes around. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Now this may sound ignorant, but why do you need a shield over your PTO coupler? I assumed it was to protect you from flying grease. If the coupler comes off the shaft, I doubt the little shield would help much. And surely it's not to protect your hands. Nobody would put his hand near a turning PTO. Uh... would they?

Nope, the shielding isn't to protect you from flying grease, but to protect you from death or injury.

Probably not - - on purpose, but everyone gets a little careless once in awhile and just getting close enough for a shirt sleeve or pants leg to touch it is all it takes. A good friend of mine got a pants leg caught once quite a few years ago and was very thankful that he'd just come from work wearing those double knit slacks and hadn't changed into his denims because it ripped his pants right off. Then denim wouldn't have torn so easily.

Preach it Brother Bird.
OSHA requires the PTO have overlapping shielding from the tractor back to the implement. If you hire someone and they use the equipment, loan your equipment, and or rent equipment out that is used by others you must be in compliance with OSHA. Even if you rent a piece of equipment and have someone else use it that equipment must be in compliance with OSHA. It's not just a good idea "IT"S THE LAW".

Interesting. I rented a 3PT auger a couple of weekends ago, and the tumble bar (PTO shaft) did NOT have a cover of any kind on it. I thought this was odd, and looked really scary spinning around. I made sure my helpers were well clear of the unit while it was operating. This auger was rented from a large regional equipment rental place.

Both the Rental Yard and you were liable. You were primary because the unit was in you care, custody and control. The rental yard knew better but exposed you to this risk. If a maiming accident happens and you are found negligent, most homeowners do not have enough insurance to cover an accident. Most home owners have $300,000 or less. I have a friend that had $300,000 of liability, had an accident happen and they settled out of court for $800,000. The other 500 large came from his pocket or he would have lost his house or and farm. Everyone should have at least $500,000 of liability limits on their home owners policy, if not increase it. It often costs only $30 a year to do this. Most farmers I know carry at least 1-2 million dollars worth of liability insurance.
