Just noted a problem with the pto on my 2630. It only happens when using the rear pto position, once in awhile it seems to not shut completely off when the lever is shifted to disengage. Doesn't spin fast and I've not tested to see how strong the rotation is, but have checked and the lever is definitely in the off position. Condition started in last 5hrs usage on a 100hr old tractor. Any ideas? I'm a long way from a dealer but could make arrangements. Oh yes, all oils changed about 40hrs ago, no leaks or other noticeable problems.

thanks for reading and carry on

Just a guess here, but is there a linkage adjustment to check, or a sticky point on the linkage?

Haven't found any problems with linkages and that would probably not answer the situation with only the rear pto showing the creep. The mmm when engaged and disengaged does not show the same problem.

Mine has always done that. Grab hold of the spline shaft and see if it stops, my guess is that it will, no big deal.

I have a couple of tractors that have always done that, but I sure ain't gonna grab anything moving on a tractor:eek::eek::eek:

OMG it's not a rattle snake. If your afraid, take a 2x4 and hold against it and 'll bet it stops:laughing:

I actually did grab one on one of my tractors many years ago and it stopped, but I was a lot younger and I don't know what possessed me to do it. My neighbor lost all but one finger when he got too close to a PTO and a high school friend lost his arm. I am sure there is a safe way to do this, but I just don't want to know bad enough to risk my hand or a kick back from a 2x4.

I would not put my hand on it. Maybe a 2 x 4 or something similar. On some tractors, when you pull futher back on the lever, the PTO stops. Can you adjust the linkage. Ken Sweet

I'll admit up front, that I don't know specifically by what means pto's get their power from the engine. Also, I'm sure that the manufacturers use several methods.

This being said, it seems to me that just the viscosity of oil for lubrication could allow some turning. So, even though no "real" power is being transmitted it could allow the creep being seen.

Just thinking out loud, which can sometimes be very dangerous.

Am I WAY OFF on my line of thinking?????

Many, many, many WAY more knowledgeable than I on this one.

SOP or standard operating procedure. It happens on many tractors and on all the ones I have owned. Its not a problem, its quite normal, you'll be OK.

OK, if a shaft from an implement was attatched and it continues to turn, that would be one thing and yes I would not grab hold of it. If nothing attatched and it turns slowly thats normal and your not going to get hurt by it. Engage the PTO and you will or should see it turn a lot faster. Good grief:laughing:

Don't know if it(the pto) creeps with nothing attached, but it does when a rototiller or a rotary cutter or a cyclone spreader are hooked up , but not all the time and I've not found any operator actions to explain the randomness.

Well that's diiferent than I thought you were describing. If it's turning with an implement attatched that's not normal and I would not grab it. I was refering to it moving with nothing attached which is common. It sounds like a adjustment problem.:(
