Could a mounting a small transmission between the tractor PTO and the diggers PTO shaft work to slow down the auger and to provide for reversing the auger.

Assume talking a post hole auger?

If there is room, might work fine. Do you have a tranny in mind?

Reucing the PTO output speed through a gearbox will multiply the output torque. You need to determine if the implement can handle the increased torque and if the implement will be safe. By safe I mean will the tractor turn the digger or will the digger turn the tractor.

Reversing the auger will depend on the transmission you select. I assume you want to be able to switch between forward and reverse by selecting a gear on the transmission? Should be doable if the tranny has a reverse gear to select.

You'll also want to ensure the transmission can handle the torque. At 540 rpm, there is a smidge under 10ft/lbs per hp at the PTO shaft. So you're well into automotive torque categories, 25 PTO hp would be ~245ft/lbs or so. Also, with the lower speeds, there won't be as much viscous oil distribution through the system. But if you can get a dirt cheap tranny, it might be worth a shot. Certainly would be an interesting project anyway!
