First.. a 'good luck' to my fellow floridians ( and that goes for you south georgia and carolina people as well ). Hope we don't get hammered too hard.

On a related topic. I think I've finally decided to purchase the 13000/12000 watt pto generator from northern tool. I see that it mentions an input shaft , 6 spline, 1 3/8"

I take that to mean that it has a standard male pto stub like our tractors do. Am I thinking correctly? If so, then i can get a 150$ 6 spline to 6 spline drive shaft from tractor supply locally, instead of ordering the 190$ + shipping $$ one northern sells. Anyone see a problem with this thinking?

Thanks!

Soundguy,

I can't help you with your question but have you checked on ebay for the PTO shaft? I've seen them on there for less than $100.00. I wouldn't have noticed them except for the recent thread where the guy tried to pull apart his stuck PTO shaft.

You are correct on the spline size.

Have you tried Agri-Supply.

Their prices are less than Northern Tool.

Soundguy,
Be sure and let us know how the generator turns out, I have been thinking of buying the same generator.

Good luck with Francine.

Thanks Chris, and it looks like I should bid you that double as the weather people here in Jax are now telling us that we will probably only be getting 40-50 mph winds starting Sat. and that further south will get it worse. I hope Ocala doesn't do any worse. Good luck with the generator. I will also be interested to know how it does as I am going to sell the RV and there goes my generator! John

Just remember that PTO shafts are rated for the amount of power they can transmit. For that generator @ 746 watts per hp with an 80% assumed efficiency you need about 21 pto hp to achieve rated output. Startup surges could be much higher. Good luck with the storm.

Kiotijohn and slowrev. As soon as I get the genny and get some use on it I'll post back about it.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Yep.. I agree. I had originally thought about a 150$ one from TSC as opposed to the 190$ one at northern, but I found out the TSC one was 36" and only rated for 24 hp.. I didn't feel too good about that, and moved up to a 50" one that was rated for 90hp, and that almost matches the specs line per line for the norhtern one.. so I felt much better about it. Still saved about 25$ over northerns cost.. so that was a good deal.

I also noticed that northern ran an unadvertised special on those 13/12kw gennies.. They are listed at 1099.00 in the catalog and the internet site.. but I got mine for 999.00?? Florida sympathy discount? Whatever.. I'll take it. That discount paid for half of the 'priority' shipping.. which i felt was a pretty reasonable rate for a truck freight item...

I just bought a 42" 40hp shaft from the local CaseNH dealer to use on my Bush Hog. Cost was just under $110.

I have had a PTO generator for 20 yrs. Takes a little while to hook up but works great. Mine is a 7KW but that was all I could drive with the B6100E Kubota I had. I will have to replace it soon as the electronics are beginning to fail and it is an orphan.
