Hello Whiskey!

I did try it with my CK20HST! It proven to be too much....

This thread is very interesting:

PTO from Voltmaster is also interesting!

I would rather go with Winco:

They have a new 10KW

So, here is the story: I have a CK20 HST... It' s a bit small to run those, I completely agree with all comments above, but I did hook it up. It's very easy to get in the limit (pump, heating tank, etc....) 10KW is reached so fast! You will hear your tractor being overwhelm!

The dealer let me tried it, and it didn't take ten minutes to crush my 16hp pto CK20. If a remember correctly both manufacture recommended at least 20hp for the pto. I ended up with a gas 10KW portable.

Those portable gas (Honda) generators, start really easy even with cold temperature, Stabil with ethanol-free gas, my setup work flawlessly for three years now. And when the last ice storm hit home, I really needed the tractor to be free... I wonder also on the long run, the gas generator seems to be less expensive to run them my CK20.

Best of luck with your shopping
Phil

But it does not really tie up your tractor unless you are going to run it 24/7 when the power is out. My Winco is on a trailer, so it takes 5 min to unhook the tractor, go do a task, return and re-hook. In reality 8hs a day is plenty of time to run the house, pump water, etc. Most don't need a tractor after dark, so it can be running the genny then. We heat with wood, so no need for a genny after bedtime. I also don't worry about the hours since I bought a tractor to run/use and genny time will be miniscule compared to other tasks.

Drawbacks of a standby unit is that it sits and sits getting never getting exercised enough. Military 10Kw's look like they run around $2K which is pretty cheap. Then you have to house it & maintain it. I don't know about y'all but the last thing I need in my life is another engine to maintain:laughing:

Thanks for all the advice folks. Much appreciated!

Just so you all know, I've decided to go with a Honda 10kW gas portable and a Generlink input/transfer switch. If I can find a proper quality diesel generator, I'll go with that, but far too many are of questionable quality to chance it.

Before you buy anything consider your essential electrical needs. A 10kw gasoline generator will put a serious hurt on your budget, calculate the fuel consumption and cost to operate per hour and multiply by the average hours of your typical outage.
Gasoline is difficult & dangerous to store. if you have propane you need at a minimum a 500 gallon tank to supply the necessary volume of fuel.
Diesel will keep indefinitely.
If your outages are short then it's not a big deal, however if outages are many hours or days the cost of fuel will scare you!
During an extended outage you need to minimize your power consumption and the size of your generator.

If you want to get a generator that you can use the full potential of the tractor output the calculation would be 746 watts = 1HP ( Example: 20KW generator would require 26.8 HP tractor output for full potential of the generator)

Hey, that's good to know!

Howdy,
That would be true PTO at the shaft horsepower.

a small tractor which might be 30 hp engine, could be only 22 pto shaft hp.

Just a thought to keep in mind. We have had some major outages over the years some for as long as 10 days or so. Aquiring gasoline was a major problem during wide area outages. During the outage of superstore sandy there were just a few stations with power and the wait for gasoline was hours. But I found that there was plenty of diesel available. I would just find a station out of gasoline and pull right up to the diesel pump. A diesel engine will use about 1/3 the amount of fuel on equal HP engines.

For me, this was the key issue: fuel (both availability and storage). I went with LP for a built-in standby system.
