JD 2210
I think the time has come to purchase a generator and would like to use my 2210 to run it. It will only be used when the power goes out and when I need remote power which is rare. The reason for using the 2210 is because there is one less engine to fool with and I run the J.D. almost once a week so I know it will start when the time comes. I was looking at this one northstar7200 and was wondering if anyone has a northstar or another brand that they might recommend.

Looks like that would work for the 2210.

I also have a 2210, and the only thing you will need to "modify" to really use the 2210 with a PTO generator, is the PTO / Seat kill switch interlock. If you are using the PTO and get off the seat, the interlock will kill the engine. The PTO generator will work OK, but you don't want to stay on the seat to have it operate.......

I have one of those Northstars (13kW model) and they are pretty good for the price. They use capacitor excitation which is at the low end of voltage regulation technology but if you want an AVR system then you need to dish out more $$$. I've used mine a couple of times during outages and I ran my whole house on it and it seemed to handle motor starting ok. I have a well pump which draws 20A starting which is about the biggest motor. Only problem I can see is if I have a couple of motors starting at the same time as well as the water heater and range going then I may run into trouble but it hasn't happened yet.

What sort of loads do you plan on running? That 2210 has about 17HP at 3k RPM so you should have plenty of power at PTO speed for the genset.

That seems like a good match for your machine, but don't forget to get a proper tranfer switch so you can operate your house safley and not hurt any lineman!

That's about the size that I'd buy when it comes time to replace my Suzuki 4400 watt unit. The 7200 watt unit would allow me to keep my well pump on with all the other stuff on my Y2K box, and my 4010 is big enough to drive it (at least 10 hp needed vs. 14 available on my PTO).

A good way to mount this is to buy a TSC carryall, bolt a pallet to the carryall and then bolt the generator to the pallet. Then buy or cut a PTO shaft to fit.

Mount the pallet on castors to make attaching the carryall/generator to the 3 ph easier.

I've a transfer switch in my Y2K box that turns the main power off and the generator power on at the same time. Actually, it's just 2 switches side by side with a metal thingie in between that rotates between the 2. Can't turn one on or off with the other going opposite.

However, I had to add one of the 110 circuits to my carriage house to the generator output. Have to turn off the breaker to the carriage house before turning on the switch to the that circuit on the carriage house on which my freezer runs. Off that same input box, I also wired another circuit and put in 2 plugs labeled "Gen" in the house to run our frig in the basement plus 2 computers.

The previous owner put in the Y2K box and didn't have a frig in the basement nor the carriage house.

I have a northstar 13kw unit. Been pleased with the (limited) use I'vd used it for so far.

Thank's for the head's up I knew about the safety switch but never gave it any thought. Now I will have to place a "cinder block" on the seat because modifing the switch would really be unsafe. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have calculated the load to be about 6700 watts. I plan on putting in a trans. switch and wiring the fridge/freezer, sump pump, well pump, and heater which doesn't get used since I have a pellet stove, and the leg that the pellet stove run's off of since that will power a light and in the summer the a.c. is plugged in to that leg. would like to put the water heater on there to but it is 220 and I think I would be cutting it close if I can even use a 220 ckt with the trans switch cause the one I seen didn't have a blank for a double breaker.

I have a northstar 13kw unit, I run it 24/7 for two weeks after hurricane Wilma last year. very good unit and use my bx2200.

Here's a tip/trick from florida... aka hurricane target...

For hot water via generator with limited power handling, what many did was run the pump on the genny to build water pressure full up, then switch to water heater for about an hour to let it heat, then swap back to the pump. This lets you take a somewhat leisuly shower with warm water and good pressure that doesn't drop off in a couple minutes.
