L3710 rear PTO problem?
I'm brand new to the forum, but looks like a great place. Hoping I can find some direction here....have done some searching but not come up with anything exactly like the problem I'm having (could have overlooked it)

Aanyway, I just purchased a ~2000 model L3710 4x4 hydrostatic transmission tractor with 1000 hrs on it. Started mowing and a short time in, there was a loud banging noise....no torque on mower, but shaft would continue to spin (from force I think). Noise would stop when I push in the clutch. This would happen periodically while mowing and sometimes when I raised the rpm. If I mow in Low as opposed to Medium, it seems to work better, but still "slips out and makes noise" just not as frequently. Wierd thing is, I hit a few logs/stumps and it would keep right on mowing...

Does someone have thoughts of what it may be and what is required to repair/replace? Thanks for any help!

We need more input to help. Describe the mower, Is it a rotary cutter (aka bush hog, aka brush hog) or is it a finish mower driven with the spindles drive by belts?. Does it still cut materiel? That is not clear in your description (no torque on the mower?) We are not sure what went "bang" and if it was benign or did it ruin the mower, or the PTO shaft, or the PTO power train. Is the mower mid mount or rear mount? etc etc.. need input. Pictures would be nice.

Thanks for response. rotary cutter, with shaft from PTO. The "banging" noise, once it starts, is continuous until the clutch is pushed in or PTO/shaft slow way down...basically "bangs" on every revolution of the PTO/shaft. The PTO and shaft continue to turn, but it will not mow as a result of no torque during the noise - I believe the only reason it continues to turn is from the force of already spinning. Mower is fine....don't know about PTO shaft or power train as that is what I am trying to figure out. There is really nothing to show in pictures....maybe a video would help...I'll see if i can get one this weekend maybe. I originally thought it was the mower, but I switched mowers and shaft....still same result

Well, if you have swapped mower and PTO shafts... um.. this doesn't sound too good. This sounds like a component failure inside the PTO power train. Not good. I suspect yourself or someone else is going to be looking inside pretty soon to discover what this is. Perhaps someone else will chime in with a better outlook, I hope so.

yea, doesn't sound good at all...I'm in discussions with the place I bought it from as I have only put 2 hrs on it since I bought it and most of that was trying to figure out what is wrong. Does anyone know if there is an internal PTO clutch on this model? I've gotten conflicting reports.

I don't know much about that model, I have heard the L2800,L3400 and L3700 have some PTO "dogs" that have been know to fail.. sort of a ratchet like piece.. perhaps yours is similar. I just don't know.

After viewing L3710 parts schematics I'll guess the clutch cams on pto shaft are worn out and slipping which will probably require a tractor split.. Parts keys 050 & 070

thanks for the pic and diagnosis! makes sense...I went ahead and took it back to the place we bought it from. Hopefully they are going to work with me on the repair/costs. Thanks to all for the help
