Tommy, I have tried to hold the control lever in gear with the bush hog attached. the pto will start to turn then jump into neutral. I can then put the lever into the high speed and it runs fine. I had been using The bush hog in low speed before this started occuring. What is so strange is that if an implement is not attached I can put the PTO in low speed and it turns just fine. Do the PTO shaft gears ever get stripped?

Make sure the ball bearing is in the bottom of the linkage. The shaft with the 540/1000 rpm moves in and out sideways and possible the ball bearing detent ball fell out..

You may need to take the lift box off and look at the PTO drive gears at the very rear of the differential housing. It is heavy so use a hoist or get extra help. We have had a few 200 series JInmas in the past that PTO would not stay engaged, but all could be held in by hand pressure or bungee cord on the speed selector lever. The shift fork that selects the speed may be bent, or the cogs that engage the 540 gear set may be damaged. Unfortunately there is only so much diagnosis that can be done from outside the castings.

I assume I will have to drain the hydralic lift box if I am to remove the box. I had used the 540 speed with the implement on for over 2 hours before this happened. If I take the implement off it will engage in the 540 and the PTO shaft will turn smoothly without jumping out of gear. All detent balls are in place and the speed lever goes back far enough to engage. I think the shift fork may have gotten bent so the low speed gear is not fully engaging or some teeth may have been knocked off the one of the low speed gears. What do I have to remove from the lift box in order that I can lift it off? I do have an engine hoist that I can use to lift it off. Thanks to every one for all your help!!!

Remove the seat and the hydraulic lines, drain the oil and unbolt and lift off, you will have to diconnect the vertical links and top link off the 3 point also. ONce you have it off you can see inside, might have to drain down the transmission oil to see the gears and shift linkages clearly.
