Mowing PTO Problem

Hi, I have an old B6000 compact tractor which is attached to a 4ft finishing mower.
I've started having problems when I engage the PTO - the tractor will not drive and the PTO does not turn. If I select neutral in the drive gearbox then release the clutch the pto turns. If I then dip the clutch and select any drive gear then realease again then the tractor does not move and the PTO does not turn. If I put the PTO in neutral then the tractor drives normally in all gears. Basically I can have either the PTO or the drive working independantly but not together!
Can anyone explain whats going on?

I wanted to look at a B6000 once. The owner of a Kubota dealer, who Ive known 10 years, steered me away, as that particular model features a rare reverse PTO. But if you already know that, it sounds like your PTO clutch might be half engaged. It can happen from lack of PTO use.

Yes, it runs anti-clockwise. The mower deck is designed for this so it's ok

I believe so. I'm fairly mechanical, but wasn't sure how to fix my PTO, which was stuck like yours sounds to be. For me, it was logical to bring my tractor to a dealer. But if you have the know how, then it might be worth fixing yourself.

Owned one in '70s. There is no "pto clutch"...6000's 3-speed pto is integral w/trans. PTO input shaft driven by trans input shaft. Shift forks used to select speeds and engage PTO...

Sounds like a sliding gear, either trans or (most likely) pto is staying engaged, so that when you try to use both...interlock. Possible broken/worn/loose shift fork. You might be able to see problem by taking trans top cover off...pto shaft is at bottom of case.

6000 is mechanically primitive, but you need mechanical skills and a shop manual for parts diagrams...
