I have seen a few posts here about PTO problems lately. A few months ago I noticed my PTO was not disengaging. Well since there was snow on the ground I did not worry too much about it. At first I though it might be a defective cable. Well today it was time to put the rototiller on and help out a neighbor.


It turned out the the cable was fine but the linkage on the tractor was not moving. Visions of splitting the tractor were dancing though my head....:eek: Not a pretty sight!!! So I thought I would try tapping the linkage using long socket extension with a hammer. It moved about a 1/4 inch. I was then able to pulled it back with the PTO lever. I then soaked the linkage with PB Blaster where it went though the casing. I continued this process about 5 times. And it freed up. It seems this might be a point of failure.


This tractor has less then 300 hours. So this might be a point for others to watch and keep clean and lubed. I can see how this can easily be misdiagnosed and the tractor is split in two to find the problem. One can only imagine what a dealer might charge for this.


This was a L3710 GST, but it may pertain to other models as well. Hope this is of some help to others.

Do you know if you have dual clutch live pto or Independent hydraulic pto?

It is a GST... Live PTO, not a dual clutch. The problem was binding / corrosion of the linkage shaft where it passes though the tractor casing. Sorry if I was not clear.

Gary,

please correct me if I'm wrong. GST is reference to electronically controlled Hydraulic Glide shift Transmission (i.e, shift on the go without clutching). GST should have nothing to do with PTO control. Your PTO is composed of a wet clutch pack in the rear of the differential. I thought your clutch pack may be squeezed together partially causing unwanted PTO rotation at no load.
