PTO Shaft Extender Issue

Question.....Why would one need a pto extender? Is it because the pto shaft to the emplement is too short or is it because the shaft needs to be attached further back for some other reason?

For me it was the shaft being extended a little to far on the Bush Hog to feel comfy. When I added the Pats quick connect it extended everything back about 4". So the extender I bought at ASC worked perfectly. But the Bush Hog is the only attachment I have worried about, nothing else I have uses that much tork.

In my case it is totally due to adding the Pats. Prior to that I never needed an extender as all my implement shafts reached. That said, I would not give up the Pats...way too convenient. Plan to order the extender from ASC if my dealer does not have one.

Deerslayer, How did the adapter/extender work out? Same thing with my 3901 went to hook up Hardee bush hog after Northern Tool Quick Hitch and PTO shaft is almost too short got a little wobble in it,haven't run it yet afraid to. Don't want to buy new PTO shaft $$$ .Called AgriSupply. And female operator was not a lot of help. Are you satisfied with what you bought .l know this is an early post date but it's a new problem for me. Thanks in advance if you can help

I had an extender on my older tractor, so I expected I would have the same issue with my L3901. My dealer ended up having the extender and it worked perfectly.
How many inches short do you believe it is?

The Northern Tool quick hitch extended the implement back from its original position about 4 3/8 from the end of the lower control arm.the extender is 6 3/8 long with a spring collar on the tractor PTO end the Hardee bush hog PTO end has the spring loaded pin on it, the PTO shaft itself did not separate from itself but doesn't have much engagement. I bought extender anyway it's on the way. Just hope it's long enough th make PTO shaft run with no wobble. Will post up results when I get it all together. Thanks for help keep fingers crossed cause a new shaft is $$$

The extender will add about 4" of usable length to the PTO stub shaft

Believe that may be the same length I have. I'll check mine when I go up to the barn to start snowblowing once this blizzard ends later today. Suppose to get upwards of 18 inches. Looking forward to the seat time.

So I attempted to hook up my brush hog to my new Kubota L3901 this morning. Knew I would need the PTO extender that I had on my L2250 as the Pat's EZ extended everything 4 inches or so. The extender has a bolt through it that went through the L2250's pto shaft. Problem is the L3901 has no hole through the pto shaft :hissyfit:
Used the set screw in hopes that would work....and it did until I hit a rock and then everything came off:eek: So now I am in the market to find a shaft extender that has a locking mechanism similar to those on the pto shaft drives. TSC seems to only have the one I previously described. Found one on line, Double HH with a quick release. Anyone familiar with it or other suggestions?

On old tractors where everything was sand casted and many times thicker than it needed to be, things like pto extenders were ok. However you need to realize how much additional leverage is being applied to the parts of the tractor which support the pto shaft as it exits the back of the tractor by an extender. Today, tractor's castings are thin, thin, thin. You can pry out a big expensive chunk and feel sick to your stomach.

Modern pto shafts often have the male and female parts of the shaft slid into the u joint assembly on either end and pinned in place with a roll pin.

What this means is if you find your shaft too short you can buy the basic shafts themselves and reuse the expensive u joint assembly and shear bolt assembly thus creating a low cost, longer pto shaft.

Pay attention to the plastic outer safety shields. Don't eliminate them. You can also buy the shaft covers, male and female alone, without replacing the big ends which cover the u joints and the slip bearings which make them work.

You remove roll pins 5 & 9. Pull shafts 7 and 8 out of the u joint casting assemblies and buy longer shaft male and female which you then cut to be long enough but not so long that it bottoms out at the shortest position it needs to operate in which is horizontal.

Buy the covers male and female 26 & 27

The parts you need to buy are the cheapest ones within your pto and when you are done you will have accomplished a job to be proud of and will not wind up with ends of extended pto shafts flailing around your head trying to kill you.

In case you don't see the difference between #6 & 7, one is the safety label on the female outer shaft reminding you when you cut it to maintain a minimum overlap of 6".

Lots of youtube videos on the topic of cutting and maintaining pto shafts. Search for COMER Pto. Comer is big in the worldwide world of ag gearboxes and pto shafts.

+1 Dave's post. Or you could remove the quickhitch for your mowing this round, and see if it's worth it, in $ vs. time. Or are those pats ones welded on?
I'd definitely lengthen the 'lemon tube' rather than put the UJ further back with an extender.
