With a front mounted snow blower, the drive comes from the mid PTO spud. (2500 rpm)
If the shaft length is 60 inches "joint to joint" What would be a "rule of thumb" for the shaft overlap?

I'm sure "as much as possible" is the most correct answer, But... what might be a reasonable minimum? 12 inches?

Does it matter which of the several pto shaft configurations are used?

Adapters need to know this stuff... ;-)

Usually there is another bearing at the front weight bracket so there are actually TWO drove shafts being used. A long one from the mid-pto to the front bearing and a shorter one from here to the blower.

Right

But that offers nothing relevant to the question/

It's the long shaft (generic) overlap that is the crux.

On a telescoping shaft, I just want to make sure it's long enough to not come apart at full extension AND short enough to not bind at shortest extension. Other than that, depending on load/hp/etc. I wouldn't probably want less overlap than 5-6 inches minimum, and max overlap can be whatever as long as I'm not jamming the ends at short extension or binding on movement.

What alexpops wrote.
Just make sure it can't come apart when you have it at extreme extension and doesn't bind when everything shortens up.
With my rotary cutter I'd go over a hill and it would almost come apart, go down in a slight valley (like a ditch), start coming up the other side, when it would almost bind.

My owners manual for my PTO driven Wallenstein chipper recommends, at least, six inches of overlap.
