PTO Shaft Problems

I recently purchased a flail mower that has a bad end on it (the end that is splined and goes on the tractor PTO stub).

The pto shaft is good other wise, and I would like to replace the yoke that buts up to the tractor.

I found an end at the local store that has a pinned connection, but I would need to press the old yoke off and press a new one on. I don't have a press and it looks difficult, as I don't think you could push the yoke off the universal joint without hitting the ujoint.

Has anyone ever replaced the yoke on a PTO shaft? Is this something a shop needs to do?

Couple of options (Minimum tools)

Punch out the pin with a concrete nail and an ordinary hammer. It may be a split roll pin or a solid pin. The roll pin would be hollow. Just lay it on the ground, maybe a cement sidewalk, drive the pin into the seam beween two slabs. Keep your foot on it to keep it in position. Then you need to get the yoke off the shaft. Hammer and a piece of wood (2x4 end). Or better: the shaft just slips out.

Option 2: just hacksaw off the old yoke. There's probably plenty of extra shaft anyways. Then you need to drill a hole into the shaft when its in the yoke and put a bolt (or pin) in there to keep it in place. Parts at Lowes, Home Depot or Menards, or TSC, etc.

These types of repairs are often done out in a field in the middle of NowWHere. So don't expect it to be very difficult.

One last option: Fix the old yoke. If the pin and spring are missing in the type of shaft that you have. Again use a nut and bolt (ACE Hardware) to keep the shaft on the pto stub. MAke sure its tight and not too long.

G'day why don't you check out the bare co site you will prob find that you can just replace the splined end to the uni joint
