PTO shaft "stub" broke off

If you have not pulled it apart yet I have done a few of these on slightly smaller tractors. I reverses one of them up two ramps to get the bum up as high as possible so I would not lose much oil. The other I parked noise first in a drain.

Well, I didn't think of that... Are you saying let gravity work for you?:)

I have not taken it apart yet. I was feeling I will just drain all the fluid.... I wish I had a spot to lift the rear or drop the front... But with weather pending, I'll keep it indoors in case I have an issue and am delayed .... I hope to get this done in an evening. Am I being an over achiever ?

If all the parts are right and no issues, a couple hours is a reasonable time frame for pulling it out, swapping the shaft, and install.

Hope it goes smoothly. The sooner the better, we wanna hear the story. *grin*

Ok, sorry for the delay as the tractor is fixed. Sorry there is no photos as I had the dealer fix it. As I continued to use the tractor for jobs it got to cold to attempt this myself outside.

Irregardless this is what happened. I purchased a new implement (mulcher) which when they asked what tractor and model etc it was going on, the salesman stated this is so they get the correct size PTO shaft. Well, needless to say this is because it goes in various size machines and not that they cut down a shaft to fit my specific tractor. Well, I hooked up the new implement with all the hydraulic hoses and then lifted the three point only to hear "pop". Yup, busted it right off.

So, abuse, No. Accident, yes. Could / should this if been prevented, yes. Miscommunication on my part lead to this.

More details to come. I'm waiting on the dealer to hear from insurance if they are covering it. Insurance called me and said they may not because it's a wearable item. They said this will be determined in how the estimate it written. However it's not that I wore it out or abused it, it was an unintentional mistake. Dealer says they should cover it. So I hope to hear this week.

Thanks for sharing the story... a little anti-climactic, perhaps you could take a dramatic writing class for future posts... *grin* just ribbin' ya, glad you got it fixed, hope there is some reimbursement so the full cost of repair doesn't have to come out of your pocket.

And, I guess I am kinda glad it wasn't a more exciting story, one that started "Well, I had the tractor at full throttle, was running the pto, and...." could have ended with "and that's when the broken parts of pto shaft hit me in the head and I got hauled off in the ambulance."

Again, thanks for sharing.

I don't want to assume, but I think mechanical wise this dealer gets the job done correct. I hope. They completely took my L3540 and seperated it in half to fix a seal in the transmission (under warranty). Now if this was the dealer down in the city, Id be hesitant as their main source of sales is ex mark mowers. So, my fingers are crossed.

It was a perfect sunny day and the temperature was just right. As I just finished installing this new beast of a mulcher, I decided I had to put it into action. The anxiety in me grew as I waited for this machine to be delivered after a short delay in shipping.

So there it was, all hooked up. The laser cut pins for the lower links fit snug as if it was the perfect marriage. The smell of new hydraulic fluid from the lines as they made their first connection to the ports was second to none. Now the moment of truth. As I sat in the pilot seat and grabbed the solid lever to my right, I began to pull back as I watched the amazing amount of metal begin to raise. It was a gorgeous site. This plan is now set in action after weeks of design. It was then and only then I heard this terrible noise. A noise is never heard but Drew and instant concern. As if I was ejected out of the seat I ran to the business end of my precious machine. "Oh no" I thought to myself. It can't be. It's not true. As I say several mommy daddy words in complete rage I have nowhere to direct these feelings. The miscommunication from the saleman? My amazing wife ? The dog? NO. NO NO NO. It was simply my error.

So as I disconnect this beauty of an implement, I start having the repair process cross my mind. I dissect the break and am sick to my stomach with guilt, anger and frustration. With curiosity I wonder how bad this repair is. Does it have to be dismantled and cost thousands? The research begins and I hit several dead ends. After months of review and parts in hand, I decided the best place to go is the home of the Kubota. The dealer is there with open arms and says it can be done. With short notice the man in charge of my case gave me a jingle with some potentially disappointing news. The part may not be in fact under policy. As a small pit grew in my belly that I could not understand, he said standby as he awaited the repair write up.

In the midst of the afternoon I hear my phone begin to ring from an unknown local number. As I answer it I can hear the sound of an angel. These words couldn't be true " your Kubota is ready". I leaped with excitement as I see the light at the end of this journey. Now my little fingers type away on this small iPhone to share my life with friends and foe in this never land place in hopes to prevent others from such misery. As scrutiny will come along with words of encouragement, I now will get dressed to go retrieve my girl. It will be like mending an old friendship after a rough discussion. This will be forgiven but never forgotten.

How's this?
